Very solid stuff, and nice to here Kozelek's lyrics and voice in a different more diverse musical background. There's dirty rock, piano ballads and soul tunes here and for the most part they are fantastic.

I know this CD is excellent and I want to buy it! But I can't as it was only released as a limited edition so now it's fetching silly money on eBay - I bid £22 which wasn't enough. I'm not equipped for downloads so Mr Kozelek has missed a sale.

5.0 out of 5 stars How the... wait... WHAT? Seriously??!! 29 Oct. 2013

Ok, I knew Mark Kozelek was f#$%#ing good. But when the album "Perils from the Sea" came out, this man had reached into my very soul and had made the most heart-wreckingly beautiful album. Possibly my number #1 of the year. And if that amazing feat weren't enough, he comes out with an album that is on par with that friggin gem of an album.

I am just blown away from his output this year. He has not rested on his laurels, which are many, yet, has crafted songs that are remarkably touching, ernest and creative.

This is the kind of genius that made Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and all these guys who they are today. Simply long term dedication, a genius mind and an artist's heart.

Very enjoyable music and stories from Kozelek, one of the best composers existing right now. Songs about boxing, Anton LaVey, the death of his lovely cat and life situations will keep your ears up like dogs. Very nice melody too. Subtle but genious. Maybe perfect.

I first sought this out after hearing "Richard Ramirez Died Today Of Natural Causes" by Kozelek's project Sun Kil Moon. I hadn't heard much from Kozelek since being a fan of the Red House Painters a few years ago. It piqued my interest, the way Kozelek almost seemed to be reading something like journal entries over his guitar playing.

A very similar approach to "Richard Ramirez.." is used on many of this album's tracks. I don't know that too many songwriters could basically sing what happened to them on the way to the studio and make it interesting, but for me, Kozelek does that. Just check out "Livingstone Bramble" - a really cool combination of autobiography and joking about how Kozelek can play circles around you AND your mom. I love how Kozelek can make me laugh hysterically, like on "Livingstone.." and also hit me with the things in life that are often difficult to understand, like death, but still provide an optimism that isn't forced or cheesy.

The band, Desertshore, sounds fantastic on every single track, and to me, is a perfect compliment to Kozelek. They are great at setting a mood. Based on my limited listens, I hear bits of Neil Young, The Smiths and really good feel-great country music. They definitely have their own sound though - and play a big part in making this my favorite new music in a long time.

I usually don't think about stuff like this, but based on "Mark Kozelek & Desertshore", I have the feeling Kozelek still has yet to write some of the best music of our time. If you're already a fan, don't miss it. If this is your introduction to Kozelek, I think it's a great place to start-then maybe go for "Retrospective" by Red House Painters which is also very, very good.
