Hello,
I live in Surrey and am a physiologist, biomechanist and ultra-endurance adventure racer. I lecture on physiology, exercise rehabilitation and research methods in London, and am currently working towards a PhD in biomechanics. Between finishing my Master's degree and commencing my Phd, I spent many years researching human evolution, focussing on areas such as nutrition, comparative anatomy, and the development of bipedal locomotion.
I believe the health industry has become overrun with too many charlatans selling pseudoscience systems, for all things exercise and health-related, and I began writing partly to try to produce something sensible and clear to help improve understanding. I appreciate that specialist, scientifically-sound books will never sell in the numbers the celebrity-endorsed fad books do, but I believe that if I can at least put the information out there - so people can read it if they so wish - then that would suffice.
As for the race books, well there I was simply trying to tell a good story, perhaps encourage others to try new races or just to help with motivation for running. I did not achieve that with my first edition on the Marathon des Sables, but soon understood why and did what I could to rectify that for subsequent editions. My current titles have far more personality and 'me' in them than my first attempt, which works well for some people although certainly not everyone. I am sure there is more to be improved for future editions, but for the time-being I am satisfied that they offer what I wanted them to.
There are many books on running that I love to read, but there are not enough, and I had hoped I could perhaps contribute something to the genre. My race books contain a fairly good amount on the science of training and exercise - each book contains an in-depth scientific review of something related to extreme physiology - about the way the body adapts and responds to extremes of training and environments.
So, that is me and a very brief overview of why I write. Over the coming years I plan to write more on nutrition and exercise, although the race 'trilogy' is now complete. The next book for the 'in extremis' series will hopefully be on something Polar or similarly extreme.
