Take to the pitch in Mario Strikers: Charged, this rocket fuelled football frenzy, the follow-up title to Super Mario Strikers, arrives with a new roster of features, only for Wii.Players form an original team by combining one of 12 captains with three of eight sidekicks before competing in one of the game's many modes. Anything goes in Mario Strikers: Charged, as players are allowed to use a variety of special abilities to clinch important goals. Each captain has his or her own set of skills and super abilities, as well as the ability to perform special shots called Mega Strikes, where the iron ball splits into five balls and flies at the goal. The defending player must use the Wii Remote to target and aim at and shoot these balls out of the air before conceding a goal. In this game, players also can charge energy to the metal ball, making it more likely to find its target when fired at goal. Each of the stadiums in Mario Strikers: Charged has various characteristics and contraptions, which influence game play. Players must learn to use this to their advantage to truly dominate the pitch.Mario Strikers: Charged not only features an action-packed multiplayer mode, but also supports the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, which allows players to take part in tournaments with others.
If you dont recognise the name, this is the sequel to Mario Smash Football on the GameCube (the name will likely change for the UK release). The original was one of the hidden gems on Nintendos previous console, but this new game is not planning to be quite so coy. For a start it will be one of, if not the, first Wii games to be fully playable online, as Mario and his usual company of heroes and villains take to the pitch for some truly bizarre 5-a-side action. Although the basic rules of football are observed this is no serious simulation, with special moves galore and lots of Mario Kart style power-ups to pick up along the way.
The game uses the analogue stick on the nunchuck to move, with the Wii remote itself being used to tackle by gesturing in the appropriate direction. Theres no such thing as a foul in this game so not only do you take possession via a range of painful looking barges but you can also try and push an opposing player off the side of the pitch and into an electrified fence. Other elements not usually featured in the beautiful game include the "mega strike", which is a special move unique to each captain and which creates an automatic shot on goal which the other player has to save with the Wii remote. With football games becoming ever more serious and complicated this should please both sports fans and those simply looking for the next big multiplayer hit.

The game includes a basic pick up and play mode where u can play vs the AI or against up to 3 other people on one console. There is a tournament mode where you pick a captain and your 3 sidekicks and use them to wins 3 cups with the AI getting more difficult as you proceed through the mode. By compleating each cup you unlock an extra captain which you can use in the game. There is a chalange mode where you are set various tasks to complete mainly scoring a set number of goals or comming back from behind with a pre chosen team. Finally there is an online mode with 1v1 and 2v2 play against people from across europe where you can chose from all captains even if you havn't unlocked them.
Gameplay is fairly simple but well executed. The ball has a coloured light in it and when you pass it about or power up a shot it charges up the ball. The closer the colour is to white the more chance the shot has of going in. If a captain fully charges up a shot he does a megastrike where your opponent has to try and save multiple shots and upto 6 goals can be scored. If a sidekick charges up a shot it causes a special shot where the ball travells towards goal in a fire ball or in a huge egg aswell as many other powers.
The only motion controlls are shaking it to tackle your opponent however if this is mistimed your opponant gets a powerup from tortoise shells to captain specials like super mario or bowser breathing fire.
This is a well executed game with over 40 matches in tournament mode 10 chalanges and online mode the lifespan is fairly long. Not for traditional footall game fans but for anyone who likes mario games like double dash this is for you.
