Marilyn Mendoza (Maya) was born and raised in Brooklyn New York. Her memoir "From Agoraphobia to Zen"-uncovering the core of my anxiety and reclaiming my life, shows how one woman triumphs over severe anxiety and truama. From living in a closet for a decade in fear to deciding to search for the tools to heal,the book is a journey filled with anguish, wry humor, inspiration and passion.
She has lived in Hawaii for thirty years where she teaches English and has served as an a Americorps volunteer working with homeless, drug addicted,and mentally ill women. She is now involved with organizations that give survivors a voice and finally end the stigma of mental illness. She enjoys writing and perfoming spoken-word poetry and Spanish dance.
