Ruth Hall is a first rate writer, and this is a first rate biography. There are some superbly crafted passages, with, for me, some laugh-out-loud moments. I longed to have her write more, which usually a good sign. And what a gal...! For the years of the 1920's, our Marie was just about the most controversial, engaging and pivotal person-of-the-moment in the English speaking World's spotlight.

Unfortunately - as Ruth Hall's compelling book makes clear - our Marie was also a bit bonkers.

Well, actually, more than a bit.

She was, by our day's standards, a thorough-going eccentric. But that was really the only way that a woman of great capabilities, burgeoning ego and a whole lot of nerve was ever going to shake up the ossified Victorian, 'buttoned-up' values (all propped up by a vicious and pernicious established church) which dominated and near crippled every-day people's lives.

Bonkers she may have been (and that'll be bonkers with a capital 'Bonk') but I can't help liking her. Marie Stopes was by turns exasperating, courageous, capable of great cruelty to those she should have loved, and yet, admirable. Because - there is a before and an after to her moment of glory on the world stage. Never again would people be denied from talking about and demanding their due access to, birth control methods. Let's never forget how many women DIED from their lack of access to basic knowledge about their own fertility and bodily health, especially in the dangerous process of child birth.

But as good as this biography is, I find that I'm left with several basic questions unanswered.

I find this writer to be terrible at writing a readable account of M. Stopes life. She never uses a short word when a long one is available. She is overly pedantic and her syntax is awful. She makes many sentences almost incomprehensible with her overuse of parenthesis. A great shame really, as she has obviously done tremendous research and much hard work putting this account on paper. I have read other biographies of Marie Stopes many years ago, although I cannot recall the author's names, but they were eminently more readable.
Regarding the seller, 'World of Books' I have every satisfaction with their service and will use them again. The book arrived in good time and in the condition they descibed. Full marks to them.
Cyril Turke.

I picked this up in an antique shop & wanted to read it knowing she pioneered birth control for women when a lot still died in childbirth. I thought the author managed the topic & character of Marie Stopes very well. She does pop up socially amongst her peers in her era as a forthright, dominant woman whom you loved or loathed! I didn't find anything distasteful or shocking & pleased to have got the whole picture.
