I disagree completely with the previous review of this book. The recipes and accompanying photographs are enticing enough to make you want to try all the recipes. The book starts with a few 'simpler' recipes (which are more suggestions rather than recipes), but the bulk of the book is made up of complete recipes. I do not imagine anyone would use this book to create breakfast for the working week. I use it for the weekend when you have more time and want some ideas for a great breakfast that isn't just bacon and eggs.

I would recommend this book.

This book veers between the laughably simple (is chilled guava juice actually a recipe?) and stupidly over the top (twice-cooked cheese souffle). Many of the recipes are much more suitable for lunch: who, for example, has the inclination to make or eat deep fried whitebait for breakfast before the school run? No-one in our house, that is for sure! A book that has no place in any cook's library: the recipes that are any good are what most people will be cooking for breakfast anyway, and the ones that aren't, well, you won't want to cook them!Avoid!

HASH(0x91dcdfa8) out of 5 stars Happy surprises for breakfast 20 Feb. 2016

One of my favorite breakfast cookbooks, some interesting and unique approaches to breakfast and brunch. Savory and sweet - it's all here. Happiest surprise - the halloumi and fried green tomatoes, with aged balsamic --it's absolutely delicious! And if you're looking for more traditional dishes, like the dreamy banana pancakes on the cover - those are pretty wonderful, too. Easy to follow recipes with ingredients you already have, or can find. I love it!

I just recently purchased this book. It was the cover photo that actually sold the book. That asparagus was so beautifully presented and photographed.

Now, I have cooked for many years and really did not expect to have any difficulties with the recipes; however, the first one I made was a bit of a disaster. It was the Vegetable Pasta Torte that was drop-dead gorgeous in the photo with tomatoes, sweet potatoes, red bell pepper, cheese and pasta suspended in this egg mixture. I will admit... there was a warning in the recipe: "be careful not to burn the base", and guess what... it burned! I think the cooking time of 15-20 minutes could not have been correct and I was terribly disappointed. I proceeded to scrape off the burned part, and I must say, it was quite delicious underneath, but not a good beginning for my first try from this book.

The next recipe I tried was the Salmon Niçoise with Little Pasta Ears, and it was delicious. Please see the photo I have posted.

Until I try a few more recipes, I will give it 3 stars and will update after I try a few more.

Also... be aware that some of the ingredients called for in the recipes may not be easily available in your area... things such as: dashi granules, red miso, Kaffir lime leaves, Peking duck, poppadums, green papaya, kecap manis, etc.

I will update this review as I try more of the recipes... please, stay tuned!

This book is easy. Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to make...easy. The font is large, the pictures are large and each recipe takes up 2 pages (one for the recipe and one for the picture). The recipes are tasty, but not "knock-me-off-my-feet" tasty but more "I'm-satisfied" tasty. It is a great beginning book for breakfast. Your friends will be impressed as the dishes plate up beautifully filled with color, height, a variety of textures and overall complimentary ingredients, but there is still room for additions/improvements (a little parsley here, a little salt and/or fresh ground pepper there; a little sauce here, a little dip get my drift).

HASH(0x8ea6d6b4) out of 5 stars An elegant yet thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' compendium 3 Feb. 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on
Format: Paperback
Compiled by recipe writer and food stylist Jody Vassallo, "Lunch" is the latest addition to the Marie Claire cookbook series from Thunder Bay Press. Showcasing ninety-five lunch recipes, each of which is illustrated by a full-page color photograph of the finished dish, "Lunch" offers a culinary wealth of mouth-watering, appetite pleasing, gourmet quality recipes organized into chapters devoted to soups; pasta, noodles, and rice; seafood; poultry; meat; vegetables, and desserts. Of special note is the beginning section dedicated to 'Quick Ideas', a gallery of lovely photographs of quick and easy offerings that range from thickly sliced Turkish pide bread with olive tapenade and springs of thyme, to crunch grissini served with guava juice and soda., to a scoop of ice cream in a chocolate waffle cone pressed with gold leaf. An elegant yet thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' compendium of wonderful dishes that would grace any luncheon table or special occasion, "Lunch" is an enthusiastically recommended and inexpensive addition to personal, family, and community library cookbook collections.
