About the Author

Matthias Thun is the son of Maria Thun, the biodynamic pioneer who died in 2012. He is continuing her research into the effects of agricultural biodynamic methods on their farm in Germany.

I have used The Maria Thun Biodynamic Calendar each year for more than thirty years, and it is a must for me. Earlier I used the Danish or the Swedish version, but I prefer the English version because in this version the southern hemisphere is added, and it gives a more total picture.

In my experience ordinary seeds are of a poorer quality now than they used to by. Not mine thought. I grow excellent seeds - and tomatoes, herbs, berries and fruit. Not for sale, but for my own use. My pizza with fresh herbs, green olive oil and spices is very popular; my grandchildren love it.

Great book. Pretty heavy and not really for new gardeners, but the book is great. It would have been nice to have a big pretty calendar to put on the wall, but it's printed on both sides so you can't really do it (unless you want to change it over after 6 months).
It's practical. Good but hard to understand if your new to it. (i've been gardening for three years, still definitely new!). I have been trying to follow it, but it's tricky when you only have a few days in a month to plant certain plants! But great concepts, and if your seasoned gardener and are very organised you should be able to follow it.

The best way I have found to understand and plant bio dynamically, I have used their calendar for a few years now. Each year I find it a must and makes the decisions easy about what to plant and when. When to weed and water, put down slug traps, plant spuds. I haven't gone as far as using or making the preparations as yet, but as a sowing/transplanting guide, excellent.... Also I am beginning to understand a little about our bit of the universe. Thank you Walter and Maria Thun and family, I enjoy your artwork and the family touch and feel I am getting to know you all.
