Review

GRAMOPHONE CHOICE Time and again as I listened, my jaw dropped at both the quality of Marenzio s cleverly varied five-voice music and the astonishing sonorities if La Compagina del Madrigale s beguiling performances: the melancholic erotic yearning of Tirsi morir volea , the exquisite dissonances illustrating lost love in Dolorosi martir, fieri tormenti the canonic imagery of a blissful dream gradually fading into consciousness in Venuta era Madonna al mio languire ... Hopefully these spectacularly gorgeous inaugural albums for Glossa will be followed by more explorations of this engrossing quality. --Gramophone October 2013

This is a fascinating and engrossing disc. The extensive booklet notes by Marco Bizzarini are engaging and detailed...Let s hope that they can keep up this high standard and perhaps one day tackle Marenzio s little known Sixth book...Passionate, beautifully balanced with perfect intonation and clear diction. Superb. --Gary Higginson, Music Web International- November 2013

GRAMOPHONE EARLY MUSIC AWARD WINNER 2014 'Sometimes a jaded critic feels privileged to review something with the most unabashedly subjective enthusiasm, and thereby find musical catharsis for the weary soul ... La Compagnia del Madrigale s enthralling performances compelled my jaw actually to drop on numerous occasions in response to hearing astonishing chiaroscuro details and expressive sonorities ... I am bewitched by Marenzio s incantations...' --David Vickers, Gramophone Awards Issue, September 2014

I'd have to confess that Luca Marenzio was a name new to me. He lived from 1553/1554 to 1599, so did not have a long life, but he was an important Italian singer and composer of the Renaissance period. He was most notable for his madrigals, and it's easy to hear in these the forms that Monteverdi must have been used to, and which he developed in his own slightly later works. I suppose his works were probably also known to other great masters of the madrigal form like Gesualdo. Certainly Marenzio's works were known and respected, and influenced many Italian composers, as well as other European composers, particularly those in England, including Thomas Morley and John Wilbye.

Marenzio had some powerful patrons during his lifetime which allowed and encouraged his talents to flourish, and he also wrote sacred works. He wrote and published some 23 books of madrigals, and it is some of these which are featured on this marvellous cd. The works on this cd comprise 14 madrigals from Primo libro di madrigali a cinque voci (1580), 7 madrigals from Dolci affeti (1582), and 1 work from Primo fiore della ghirlanda musicale (1577). The works are performed by La Compagnia del Madrigale; two sopranos, one alto, two tenors and one bass (and on track 14 another two singers, one tenor and one bass). The Primo Libro di Madirgali a cinque voci, the work most represented on the cd, was dedicated to the cardinal Luigi d'Este, brother of Alfonso II de'Este, Duke of Ferrara, and grandson of Louis XII of France, Marenzio's patron from 1578.

These are marvellous works, and performed beautifully. I am glad I have discovered (a discovery to me, anyway) a new Renaissance composer whose works I can enjoy. These madrigals are clear, lyrical, harmonious and soaring songs of love, loss, and emotion and they are a joy to listen to. The booklet with this cd offers all the words, and translations of the songs. Definitely recommended.
