This delightful album is a delicious meeting of English folk rock with the King of Americana, the seemingly promethean Bonnie `Prince' Billy. The two come together to form a dark and moody piece, working together in perfect harmony to make a deeply textured and subtle album of many layers. Despite it's preoccupation with death, it is a joy to listen to, and one of the best albums I have heard for a long time. 5 stars.

I've only had time to listen the the album a handful of times at the time of writing, but each time I've found something new revealed which is always a good sign. I'm coming at this from the point of view of being a long time Will Oldham fan, as seems to be the case with other commenters, and this collaboration finds him in in extremely fine voice. I hadn't been familiar with Trembling Bells before, but there are a host of strands in the music here, British folk (Fairport Convention, June Tabor etc), leftfield jazz influences, and some fine pop (in the best sense!) sensibilities, among others

I have been a fan of BPB for years but had not heard the Trembling Bells until seeing them together playing in Edinburgh recently. It was an interesting concert, with some challenging and entertaining music - we just couldn't make out all the lyrics properly due to the sound not being quite right. However, we bought the LP after as you do. Having listened a couple of times I am absolutely loving this record. The lyrics are brilliant - hilarious at times and it was a shame we missed these on the night. The music gets better with each listen just as a really good album should and it is fascinating. The best record I have heard in quite a while. Brilliant - buy it.

Try this one for size: I've just heard Bonnie Prince Billy & Trembling Bells 'The Marble Downs' and words like 'majestic' and 'mature' come to mind, you might call it alt-folk (but don't let that lable put you off). Most challenging and musical thing I've heard in ages - I'm getting a sense of being in an adult marriage coming through. Brand new out this month.

I bought on the strength of reviewers liking them to fairport and sandy denny. The female singer has a great voice but its only showcased once. The songs are dire only worsened by their lyrics and the male lead voice.

If only amazon had crap album as a reason for return
