The schedules at the back are good to follow and set out well.
It is also good to read Richard's experiences - although the parts where he jets off for warm weather training are pure fantasy for the average club runner !
Bong Bong Bong start knocking out the miles
Sadly, I found the book overly busy and seemed to cater more for the serious athlete than the overweight, infrequent runner like myself seeking inspiration and motivation. If you are a commited runner, perhaps at club level or better, I have no doubts this book will provide a valuable insight into training for and racing the Marathon. Regular recreational runners may be able to extract something out of it though you may need to augment the 12 week training plans to suit. If however you are an absolute beginner or a complete newbie to the distance (New Years resolution perhaps?!!) then perhaps THE NON-RUNNERS MARATHON TRAINER by David Whitsett may be a better option.
To conclude, a lot of info crammed into this which I felt would be of more value to the serious types more so than the beginner.
This is a much better book, which gives more useful advice from fairly basic to the absolute extreme of international level (mostly Richard's own experiences). Whilst some of the elite advice won't be of much use to mere mortals, it is still quite interesting to read how the best train (150 miles a week?!). This almost makes it a cross between training advice and story telling of elite athlete's experiences.
Richard Nerurkar has also got an easy to understand, relaxed style of writing which makes this very easy to read.
None of the schedules include pace info .
I expected to see that if i was training for a sub 2.45 marathon that my pace on the long Sunday run should be .............?
So the book gives you the mileage and types of training for each day and leaves you to work out the rest .
I found the layout and format to be awkward, with dull stories written by any old Tom, Dick or Harry inserted in random locations.
If you're a fairly new runner considering doing a marathon, then maybe this book will provide you with some useful motivation. But for somebody in my position, I'm afraid I can't recommend it.
