The PM6006 is an again upgraded successor of the multi-award-winning PM6005. Of course, we have retained the pre-amp and power-amp sections that exclusively feature discrete components – not a single IC in sight of the signal path. The PM6006 is upgraded for peak current at the amplifier stage, which makes it possible to refine the sound for you in much more detail. You can connect this superb integrated amplifier directly to a vast range of digital sources and use its superior 24bit/192kHz high current CS4398 DAC to create an unbelievably high level of audio enjoyment with new media. Furthermore, the unit includes now 2 optical and 1 coaxial digital inputs (an additional optical input from the predecessor, PM6005). And the complete digital section is fully shielded by an extra metal housing to ensure that the digital stage has no effect on the analogue signal. And of course all of the original features - such as five-line audio input including phono, two-pairs of gold-plated speaker connections with the convenience of bi-wiring, and a remote handset - are all still there. The lower impedance shielded Toroidal transformer, as well as customized components and unique Marantz HDAM modules care for powerful, dynamic and detailed original Marantz sound. In short, the new PM6006 is a new star with excellent genes.

On paper an electrical component might look excellent but the result may fall short of the combined design expectations. Marantz selects the appropriate components for the specific design application. In some cases it’s simply not possible to use standard components that meet the high Marantz standards. These components will then be specially made for Marantz in close cooperation with the Marantz engineers.
To optimise equipment in terms of ease of use, Marantz has designed the D-Bus system. Received remote control commands are communicated via this bus. This enables equipment without IR-receiver like tuners or hidden system together with an external IR eye to be controlled via the bypacked Marantz System Remote Controller.
A Shottky diode is a special type of diode with a very low forward-voltage drop compared to normal diodes. This lower voltage drop translates into higher system efficiency. Shottky diodes have very fast signal handling, can easily stay higher temperatures and are sensitive very low voltages.
Toroidal transformer has several advantages over a normal EI core transformer. It is very efficient and therefore delivers more power compared to the same size of an EI core transformer. In addition, due to its shape, the electromagnetic radiation and the mechanical vibration are extremely low all ending in a better sound quality.

This item is connected to a Cambridge Audio NP30 streamer, an ancient Rotel RCD951 CD player, and a pair of QAcoustics Concept 20 speakers. It has replaced a faulty Cambridge Audio Azur 640A.
In pure terms of sound quality, this is a great amp for the money. It boasts the usual Marantz smoothness and precision (those familiar with the brand will know what I mean), but with more punch than Marantz budget amps of recent past. Frequency response is quite linear - bass, mids and treble are perfectly balanced. Soundstage is quite sharp and well defined.
Finish and build quality are perfectly fine.
Only two downsides, both of minor importance to me:
1) The integrated headphone amp is nothing to write home about; it does its job of driving 'phones, but without the brilliance the amp shows through speakers.
2) Given that this amp has a (pretty good) integrated DAC, why not include a USB input, Marantz??? Only Coaxial and Optical inputs are provided, I guess a USB input would not be difficult nor expensive to implement...
I have been impressed by this amp. There is plenty of detail and the sound is pleasant both through small bookshelf types and large bass reflex. It is not short on power and treats Jazz and Classics with equal interest. The only area on sound is a very slight harshness on high treble - but that is something I often hear from quite pricey amps unless you pay £650 plus!
It is useful having coax and spdif digital inputs and also phono and the source direct gets rid of preamp noise etc.
Pairing this with a variety of sources - DAB radio, my old Project turntable, tape deck and modern network streamers all sound good and there has been no problem.
For under £300 this is good value and recommended.
I had an old Marantz PM-40SE that went beserk on me a few years ago and got some irritanting transient noise on one of the channels. Also added residual noise while it was not playing or was set to low volume. Repair shop didn't do much good either. But it still kicked it pretty good on high volume.
Then the day came I decided that this noise was not acceptable any longer and thus began my search for a worthy successor. I had this newest brother from Marantz on my shortlist, but I was soon put off by it's price tag on my local shops when compared to that of other shortlisted competitors (Onkyo's A-910, Denon's PM720AE, etc). It basically costs the whole budget I had planned for replacing my amp and the old CD player.
That was up until I found this sweet deal at amazon UK! :)
I'm not a single bit sorry I went for the PM6006! The quality of build. The clarity, the definition, the range and depth of sound! The way it sets the whole soundstage and defines the surrounding space, the precision it attacks the notes when called upon. It's all there and well worth it! I almost had to check if the my listening room was still the same size. And my 25 years old speakers just found out that they are still alive! Huge!
My only remark is that it's a shame it does not ship with 2 power cords (UK and European). Or that you may choose one of these when finishing your order. Contacted the seller right after making the order but to no avail. They could not change anything in the box due to existing policy at Amazon and it shipped with the UK plug only. Fortunately, fixed it quickly by buying an adapter plug at a local store and it now plays divinely in my room! :D
Tips: the amp arrives with the sockets on the rear 'blocked' in by red and black plastic studs (for protection), They should be clipped out with your fingernail in order to insert banana plugs etc. This is easily done. Initially the chunky physical manual that comes with the PM6006 or indeed CD6006 CD player looks the part but you quickly work out that it's the same 5 or 6 pages of basic connection instructions repeated in 16 or so different languages. Anything else that resembles actual instructions as to how to use the amp or remote (Remote Code is RC003PMCD) is only available online at Marantz's website manuals.marantz.com/CD6006/NA/EN/ - it's about 35 pages long and worth printing out.
Thirdly - the 'Source Direct' button on the facia and remote control bypasses the Tone, Balance and Bass control buttons and offers you a 'direct' defaulted sound that is supposed to be better - and I've found this to be true. You can use either of course if you prefer to set the Audio yourself.
Finally - these 2016 models also have the sockets/coaxial connections on the rear (two optical and one coaxial) I need to link it up to a Samsung Series 7 4K TV (connections my old PM6004 amp didn't have). So you may want to think about where you place your stereo set up - near or even beneath the TV or even away from it with an extended coaxial cable. I’d also place your speakers away from walls and into the room a little to allow them and your amp to breathe and deliver punch. This amp is also capable of handing Spotify from your Smart Phone via a plug-in lead. There is a pair of Phono sockets too on the rear for your record deck (sockets for any Tuner too) and two sets of four x speaker sockets should you want bi-wiring.
For the money - this is a seriously great piece of kit. Only wish I'd the dosh for the recently upgraded PM6006 'UK Edition' amp - but it's £400 instead of £280.
I can see and hear why this model has been market leader and a 5-star winner so many times. It's moved and improved, as the market has demanded. The Marantz PM6006 is recommended thoroughly. Bootiful and then some...
