Mara has become one of my favourite Runrig albums. It has a spiritual and romantic dimension, different from some of the other albums which have a stronger political slant. The Mighty Atlantic is great, and very well-known. Other songs like Road and the River (simply stunning), The Wedding and The Dancing Floor are just superb. And the album ends with the outstanding Lighthouse, which almost has a gospel-like quality. All this incredible songwriting, with the fantastic music, and of course the voice of Donnie. If you like Runrig, you will love this CD.

I bought this to replace a very old and much-loved cassette I purchased when I first discovered Runrig in 1995.
As a Scot I always loved the absolute Scottishness of Runrig and the fact that the singing is so clear and I can hear every word. They sing with pride for their country and with emotion.
I wondered if I'd still feel the same after all these years but I was not disappointed and my husband has downloaded three albums for himself.
If you are a Scot (or not), buy it!

Yes, that's how this album makes you feel. Sonorous bursts of vocals and stirring melodies litter this most impressive of Runrig albums. Seldom does an album stir the emotions of loving the elements more than this. Bagpipes break out into blue skies and then overcast orchestras evoke the crashing of the sea, ancient mariners travelling the mighty atlantic, chorals wash over the beach like a fantastic day on Iona. It's almost cinematic in scope but totally thrilling and melodious in the extreme. I could convert to being Scottish listening to this brilliant album. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!

Mara opens in subtlety with the song 'A day in a boat' and listening you would think you were actually doing just that. The album keeps to the mara theme with the superbly arranged orchestra on the song 'The Mighty Atlantic,' and the traditional Gealic roots with 'Thairis Air a'Ghleann' , (Beyond the valley). The more rock sounding tracks of 'Road and River' and 'Things That Are' add that bit of flare that most albums lack and the record finishes superbly with the final beat of the drum in the lively track 'Lighthouse', a complete contrast to the first note on the album. All in all a superb way to spend money and time.

After 30 years, Runrig are just getting better and better. Like a good port, gently and slowly aging and all the better for it.
And Mara is my favourite Runrig album, and high amongst my "all time favourities". It's not just a collection of tracks, the whole album is carefully put together and just demands you sit and listen to it from begining to end, with a good single malt, and the phone off the hook.

Mara is my favourite Runrig album, and I own them all. I think what I love most about it is the seascape feel, something that echoes through every single song. You feel like you're either on the sea, by the shore, up on a cliff watching the waves... it's brilliantly done. I live by the coast so maybe that's why it appeals so much.

And yet it's more than that. The songs themselves are beautiful and when I listen to these I really miss Donnie Munro (although I also like Bruce Guthro - it's just Donnie sings these wonderfully). I think the best tracks are The Mighty Atlantic (a song I've loved since I was about 14 and now I'm 24!), The Dancing Floor and Lighthouse, but really they are all lovely and well worth hearing.

Atmospheric and pacey with a good mix of tracks of varying emotions and that earthy Celtic beat that gets you tapping and singing along!
