Not only is this an exceptional well-structured and insightful book for anyone interested in understanding their own or others motivations. The quality and depth of understanding provided about our 9 motivators, each with their distinctive needs, wants and desires is simply fascinating. It is about time we had a book that presents the power of logic and real story behind our motivators.
In my opinion, the author, James Sale has does a brilliant job in stepping us through the roots of motivation and the development of Motivational Maps for empowering individuals, teams and organisations to increase understanding of motivation and boost or sustain performance. I thoroughly enjoyed the plethora of practical and easy to apply steps and helpful diagrams within each easy to read Chapter. It will really help you best identify your motivations and the impacts of their synergies or internal oppositions. Also it includes some great case studies not to be missed.
Motivational Maps are indeed unlike any other psychometric or personality-profiling tool I’ve undertaken. Quick and easy to experience the Motivational Map brings a new transformational power to debriefing, supporting focus and action. This book couldn’t come at a better time, as we now have introduced Motivational Maps to our clients in Australia and New Zealand. So thank you James for our clients and we but nothing but positive accolades for this unique and powerful tool.
If you want to make huge shifts in your business, particularly in the area of motivation, leadership and employee engagement, then you won't find a better tool. The fact that James has taken the time to write this supporting book just adds to the awesome dynamic.
I've been using Motivational Maps with clients in the SME world and Corporate with devastating success, in the area of Strategic Leadership & Management, Employee Engagement and Motivation - this book will simply add a powerful new dimension to this work.
This is a motivational profile, not to be confused with the many personality profiles, which in my experience, although useful, leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling but no action plan. Whereas, with Motivational Maps you can create a real action plan for you, your team, your business - and this book shows you how.
'Motivational Mapping' is a must read for anyone serious about building a great business with and through people.
Thank you James Sale
You’re probably not a trained psychologist, and why should you be? Time is precious. You might be looking for something that doesn’t impede your business, but at the same time gives you insights into your own traits, the characteristics of your team, and even your organisation.
How do you accurately describe what motivates each person? How do you measure it? You could attempt to do undertake this yourself. But you’d very likely be inconsistent with other leaders’ views and have nothing to compare against. And inevitably be biased by your own self perception - that needs to be excluded. And who maintains all this information? It’s not an easy task!
James’ magnificent work to address this largely misunderstood area provides a rich language and a metric that goes way beyond telling people what kind of personality they may have. Motivational Maps delivers what other tools don’t: deep understanding of your team members and how they work together, coupled with practical, actionable advice you can build around to give everyone a much more satisfying existence. Armed with this knowledge you can create environments where people want to work and feel empowered.
Just about every page I turned, I discovered insight after insight about the different types of motivators, and how they affect every aspect of our lives; personally, in relationships and at work. It doesn’t let up, with nugget after nugget, right to the end it’s written in a lively, engaging style. It’s a banquet of shared knowledge, advice and helpful resources that I keep coming back to.
Each chapter has many practical activities to challenge your preconceptions, and focus you on what’s really important. You learn that every person has a distinct motivational profile, and how that affects their behaviour. You can use this in practical ways; to learn how people react to risk and change, and how quickly they can make decisions.
We’ve all worked in poor performing teams and yearn for that great experience of achieving goals together without friction. There’s a chapter dedicated to this, revealing how motivators affect team performance and this appears throughout the book. I know from first-hand experience that managing appraisals is one of the most divisive and misunderstood activities in corporations. James dives right in showing how Motivational Maps can be used to reframe the appraisal discussion around support and agreement.
For leaders with responsibility at organisational level, employee engagement literally makes or breaks the company. James uses motivational maps to help define good leadership for effective decision making and growing the people. Finally, there’s a couple of case studies, demonstrating how this model works in practice, at the very highest level.
I only have one minor gripe - this is a quality piece of work in hardback cover and as a result it’s heavy - please may we have a Kindle version? :)
Based on deep observation, research, and experimentation, this book reflects the incredible work James has committed himself to, and it’s paid off: the Motivational Map and its related tools go way beyond what other products attempt. You want increased employee engagement, happier staff, higher retention, better job candidates, a more contented self? You need Mapping Motivation on your shelf.
I received this book for Christmas, and it truly is a gift.
