- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2009Format: PaperbackA rattling good read, as the story takes in the broad swathes of Fifteenth century life, and, more importantly, thought. It is in thought, and words, that the narrative propels itself, from the gutters of Paris, to the fall of Constantinople, through to the dankness of England, and thence to (possibly) the new world. Period detail abounds, and real historical characters mingle with the fictional, but in a way that doesn't jar, or seem inappropriate. Indeed, the scholarship is effortlessly hidden behind a mask of fable, but such that a multi-layered novel emerges, with many aspects hidden in plain sight! For the lover of the esoteric, there are plenty of moments to relish, from Christian Rosenkreutz telling the story of a wedding (but with no chemicals!), to the notion of an order of the Golden Dawn. But the real hero of the work is the mappamundi itself, which not only is a cartographer to the narrative, but has a life beyond too. Very difficult to write a review without giving too much of the story away, but this will appeal equally to esotericists and lovers of historical fiction too.
