Product Description

From the Back Cover

This book - a visual guide to the structure and anatomy of birds - is one of the most heavily illustrated ornithology references ever written. A concise atlas of anatomy, it contains more than 200 specially prepared accurate and clear drawings that include material never illustrated before. The text is as informative as the drawings; written at a level appropriate to undergraduate students and to bird lovers in general, it discusses why birds look and act the way they do. Designed to supplement a basic ornithology textbook, Manual of Ornithology covers systematics and evolution, topography feathers and flight, the skeleton and musculature, and the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory reproductive, sensory, and nervous systems of birds, as well as field techniques for watching and studying birds. Each chapter concludes with a list of key references for the topic covered, with a comprehensive bibliography at the end of the volume. The book will be a guide and reference for every level of bird study - a basic tool for investigation for anyone curious about the fascinating world of birds.

Bought for my daughter who is bird mad. She dips in here and there and so do I. I like the illustrations and find it fairly easy to understand. It came in useful when my daughter nursed a dove back to health as she was able to read about the vascular area of the damaged eye. A practical buy as it turned out.

Being dyslexic I sometimes find it hard to grasp a lot of the text in scientific books first read, but this is a great book. The illustrations are so perfect that it is instantly obvious their meaning and relation to the subject being discussed. This is such a good book that even though I only got it out of the college library to do an assignment I have had to order myself a copy. It explains everything you need to know about the anatomy of birds, I would whole heartedly recommend to those wishing to learn more on the subject, as an academic reference and those artistically inclined such as myself.

A brilliant book for any birder who wants to learn more about bird biology. I bought it mainly to get more detail on the plumage and associated skeletal structure than is available in standard birding guides. It is great for this but also covers all other aspects of avian biology. As other reviews have stated, the examples are of North American birds, but this is not at all a problem.
