Product Description

THE OFFICIAL POPPY APPEAL SINGLE IN SUPPORT OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION. The Official Poppy Appeal Single in support of The Royal British Legion for 2014 is a song written in 1976 by Scottish born folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle. It's chorus refers to two famous pieces of mili- tary music, 'The Last Post' and 'The Flower of the Forest'. Chosen by Joss Stone and Jeff Beck the song was recorded specifically for this year's Poppy Appeal campaign and will be the lead asset throughout The Royal British Legions media campaign surrounding the Poppy Day appeal.

Ist.. Hats off to Amazon, I ordered this cd on Monday night and it was delivered Tuesday afternoon- great service. 2nd Being as this is for a fantastic cause there should be no complaints off anyone. Finally the recording itself. Every year I watch the Remembrance Festival at the RAH and was watching this year when Joss Stone and Jeff Beck appeared. Being a big fan of Beck I waited to see what they performed, I had no knowledge of this being the official Poppy Appeal song. Well everyone is entitled to there opinion but I think this is 'stunning', I hear people shouting, it's sentimental, it has lost the true meaning of the original etc, etc. For pity's sake music is there to be performed in different ways not just one way or only the original way. Personally Joss Stone's vocals hit the spot more than the original for me, she sounds emotional ! I bet some people are up in arms over this review but each to his/her own.....

The cause in this instance outweighs the music. I rate Joss Stone and respect Jeff Beck's reputation but the decision to emasculate the meaning of this song was misguided. A solution could have been to have cut a longer version that could have been placed on the CD. As it stands the Furey's version stands proud as the best version although even Finbar Furey changed the words from that of the original.

I hate this. The song, as it was written and as it has been sung and recorded so many times before, is beautiful and full of meaning and pathos. This version is caterwauling. I cannot conceive why it was chosen as this year's song for the RBL's Festival of Remembrance. "Only Remembered" would have been so much a better choice. Very, very, rarely do I give a single star; but this version makes me angry.

great voice,no arguement there, great cause,no arguement there either, but doesn't do justice to the song because it only gets a coupla verses so the story and the morale to the story is missed.
buy it anyway, their heart's in the right place

Was moved by this song when I heard it as a teenager many years ago on an album called 'All the folk that fits'. I have looked for the album since but been unable to get it on CD or digital and I cannot remember who originally sang it. The Original was much more raw and as a result powerful. This sounds a little too polished and over produced for the subject. Perhaps if I had never heard the original, I would like it more as Joss Stone can certainly sing and the words still mean what they did.

It is a great pity this isn't better – even the Beeb won't play it! Joss has a great voice and Jeff's brilliant guitar playing has been in my music collection since the sixties – Eric Bogle's achingly sad song “No Man's Land” is almost as poignant as his most famous work “And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” but looks at WW1 from a European perspective rather than the Australian view. This recording is supporting a very worthy cause and I have no regrets in buying it – and I would encourage everyone to do the same; it is just very disappointing that it doesn't deliver the sum of it's parts – let alone exceed them. Five stars for effort but only two stars for the result. The Eric Bogle CD “By Request” contains the original version of this song along with many of Eric's popular early songs and is highly recommended to those unfamiliar with the artist.
