But these Manga books did the trick. The lengthy narrative of the originals is mainly gone, leaving short scene introductions and the dialogue between cartoon characters. Much of that dialogue, however, is as Shakespeare wrote it, yet set against very modern images - sounds like a mix that can't possibly work but it does. Wonderfully. My kids didn't appear to struggle with the language at all and very quickly grasped the core of the story, the characters involved etc. etc.
After reading these I took them to see a (modern) adult production of Romeo & Juliet... they were enthralled, literally on the edge of their seats and never taking their eyes off the characters on stage. They followed the story in a way they'd never have been able to do had they not first been exposed to these Manga versions.
Top marks. If only they were part of the national curriculum, there'd be a lot more kids engaging with Shakespeare and gaining from that exposure a sense of these important plots which crop up again and again in literature and films and which are, for those reasons if no other, a vital part of cultural learning.
A beautifully illustrated classic. I decided to buy it for a friend
and for myself!! The illustrations are charismatic and the story
fits so wonderfully with the images.
I know that it went down very well.
208 pages of intense moody visuals. If you're a sucker for
awesome graphic novels then this is for you!
