Attaching the tripod to your camera can be done in a matter of seconds and when on, the camera does feel secure and stable (The latter is because the legs spread very wide when deployed and even extend somewhat!). That little red knob you see in the picture tightens and loosens the head, allowing you to get your frame reasonably level, or even swing the camera on its side for a portrait shot. There's also a little switch on the other side from the red knob that lets you increase and decrease the angle of the legs (the 2 options are pictured). It does need to be said that unless your screen swivels, you might find yourself getting down into some awkward positions to compose, but you're supposed to be a photographer, so deal with it.
In terms of height off the ground, there are basically 3 options from floor to the top of the head:
legs fully extended, leg angle limited (full height): 8 inches
legs retracted, leg angle limited: 6.5 inches
leg angle increased: 4.5 inches
Now, I've given this 5 stars, but that's because I was using my little D3400 and a kit lens. I watched videos of people mounting larger kits, like the D7200 with more substantial lenses and it was clear to me that this tripod probably can't guarantee satisfying operation at those weights, so bear that in mind.
Other than that, I can recommend this to anyone wanting a compact solution to mounting their (smallish) camera on something steady and nonintrusive while abroad.
All I can say is these reviews have received faulty units...
As my images show I tried the head lock on some heavy Nikons and lenses and it held rock solid...the F2 and telephoto ways in just shy of 2kg and I felt sure I could have gone higher!
Maybe the QC has become a bit iffy as these units are made in China for Manfrotto but I read an article where the lock tension can be adjusted by removing the legs to expose the ball tension setting screws below.
I was also suitably impressed by the use of mixed materials with the legs operating beautifully....including the handy low angle height mode.
All in all this is a magnificent tripod...and iff you get a duff one either adjust it or simply return for one that has been set up perfectly...fortunately mine was....
This is much more sturdy than previous mini tripods I have purchased that tended to wobble a bit. The build and fell of the product just oozes quality.
I used this primarily with my iPhone (using separate Manfrotto phone attachment). However, I also used it with my Nikon D5300 DSLR and it was VERY sturdy. The quality of this is so good that I was confident to place it and my camera at the edge on the top of some very tall building (Empire State, Top of the Rock etc) to take some photos.
If you have a need for a mini tripod you will not regret buying this.
