I bought a couple of these to go on tripods that are used for travelling as there is a considerable weight saving over the 501HDV head (so saving precious luggage allowances!!). This is a high quality product and I have used it with both HD Camcorders and DSLRs. It works very well with both. Users who want to use it with a DLSR may want to keep in mind that the camera plate locking brake lever may protrude high enough to get in the way and be affected by the camera body. This can be overcome either by moving the included plate forwards or backwards or, if that fails, use one of the longer plates made by Manfrotto (such as the 501PLONG) which will allow the camera to be moved further away from the lever. This may cause some centre of balance issues which users need to also be aware of, but it does at least offer a solution. To be fair to Manfrotto, they do class this as a Video Head and not a Photo head so this type of problem can arise.....but is easy to fix.

This head easily handles all of my lightweight camcorders and lights/microphones plus the DSRs even when long lenses are in use. Highly recommended.

The Amazon review link seems to be pointing at the wrong product. This review is for the Manfrotto 701HDV Professional Mini Fluid Video Head. The build quality is excellent with butter smooth tilt and swivel action. Fluidity/tension adjustment is quickly and easily tuned in. It's great for my photography and videography needs.

I got this because we were shooting in Qatar and needed a very lightweight kit so we didn't exceed the luggage allowance now that even Qatar Airways seems keen on reducing cabin and hold weights. It was fitted to a lightweight Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod and did everything we needed. Smooth and fluid in operation, just right for the Sony video camera we were using. We've reduced our travelling weights dramtically and, although we no longer look as professional, we come home with high quality video for our clients and have far less hassle than we used to. Highly recommended.

Very well built video head for the serious amateur video aficionado. Heavy and rock solid with butter smooth movements. Its a tad big for ordinary consumer camcorders. Quick release plate is so long that it actually restrict me from changing battery on one of my cams (Pana NV-GS300)Unfortunately the pan drag is quite stiff even on it's loosest setting so one really need to assure that its on a sturdy/heavy tripod. In my case it's a close shot to keep my Manfrotto 055 Pro still to be honest when i pan, specially if you have it set up an a smooth surfaces like tiles, parquet etc. Tilt drag is fine but again very close to be too stiff for consumer camcorders on the loosest setting. Such a shame that there is no way to adjust the pan/tilt drag below its loosest setting and therefore i can only recommend this head for cameras weighing over 1000gr. With a heavier camera i wouldn't hesitate to give it 5*.

A very smooth video head, usual efficient delivery service from Amazon.
Only advise is that the thread for fitting to a tripod is not the same as that of a number of lower cost tripods, so if you intend to fit to your existing tripod verify that the thread size of the stud on your existing tripod is the same as the one needed for fixing this head-Manfrotto website has the details-, i had to buy a new tripod in the end but it was worth it.

The Manfrotto 701HDV Professional Mini Fluid Video Head Manfrotto 701HDV Professional Mini Fluid Video Head arrived first thing this morning, well-packed and well on time. It took around a minute to see how the thing fitted to the Manfrotto 058B tripod and to the NEX-VG10E video camera. Very nice smooth movement both in tilt and pan and no "jogging" of the sturdy 058B tripod when doing so. Note you have three locking grub nuts on the head of the more expensive Manfrotto tripods - use these to securely lock down your Fluid Head. The head is quite light but appears to be robust, and the movement is very smooth with no noticeable sloppiness, slack or backlash. This is going to be a great aid to my videography!

Ill keep this short and to the point.. The 701HDV head from Manfrotto is a cheap and capable fluid cartridge based head.. Its very light in operation, meaning there is no real firm drag from the fluid cartridges and it does take a few hours to get accustomed to this, but only if you've previously been spoilt using larger more expensive heads with adjustable drag.. I would rate this head much much higher if it had adjustable drag but dont let this put you off, its still a nice and very usable head for the videographer on a shoestring budget. Ive just come back from covering an equestrian event in the Lake District and I thought id take this head along with me and get used to it. At first it seemed too slack and I was overshooting a lot on both axis, but after a while I discovered a feather touch was the best method and got totally usable results from it.. So even though I have given this head 3 stars, OK rating, it's because I came from using satchler and German fluid heads that are pretty darn sweet.. but for what it is and the price this head is very good! just make sure you have a careful and light touch with your pans and tilts and your good..
