Oscar-nominee Casey Affleck* (Interstellar, Gone Baby Gone) stars as Lee, a man whose spare existence is suddenly ruptured when the death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler, Carol, The Wolf of Wall Street) forces him to return to the hometown he abandoned years before. Rocked by contact with his estranged ex-wife (Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams**, My Week With Marilyn) and the revelation that Joe has made him guardian of his teenage son (Lucas Hedges), Lee is forced to face up to painful memories and new-found levels of responsibility as he reconnects with his family.

I'd put this movie alongside Ordinary People and Three Colours Blue all day long for the way it looks at grief and the pain of loss. Not cheery subjects but then I've always shared the opinion that cinema can and must also be more than just sound and vision laid out in a sequence to entertain.
Well written and directed. I saw this splendid film in the cinema and have now watched the DVD twice. I am still amazed at the emotional performances given. Great cast of actors who appear natural and spontaneous and the atmosphere switches from high drama to humour. It is a heartbreaking story told in flash backs and as with all good films the audience is made to laugh and cry. Casey Affleck deserved his award. The music interludes between scenes are interesting.
In the big Hollywood blockbuster of this movie, Cassey Afflick's character would (unbelievably) forget his past in the town of Manchester-By-The Sea and all the ghosts that haunt that town for him. His nephew might appreciate his uncle's past a little more and there'd be a big happy ending as they lived their lives together.
Unfortunately, life can deal such bitter blows that those things and happy endings aren't possible.
Beautifully filmed and very, very real.
As one reviewer has already stated "It's a film about coping with bereavement - please make sure that you are in a fit emotional state to cope with it before watching."
