'Jack Urwin writes like he speaks: accessible, funny and interesting. His Vice article got people talking and now, almost two years on, he is right in thinking that the time for a big discussion about masculinity has arrived.' Telegraph

WHAT DOES MASCULINITY ADD UP TO IN THE 21ST CENTURY?

Jack Urwin traces modern ideas of masculinity from the inability of older generations to deal with the horrors of war, to the mob mentality of football terraces or Fight Club and the disturbing rise of mental health problems among men especially young men today.

While we struggle with the idea that there is a single version of masculinity worth aspiring to, depression and suicide among men have reached unprecedented levels. Man Up looks at the challenges and pressures on men today, and suggests ways to survive.

Review

'The brilliant, personal, not-actually-sexist writing by millennials about masculinity and politics that the world has been waiting for' * Laurie Penny * 'Jack Urwin writes like he speaks: accessible, funny and interesting. His Vice article got people talking and now, almost two years on, he is right in thinking that the time for a big discussion about masculinity has arrived.' * Telegraph * 'Makes a powerful argument for greater emotional honesty. Urwin's own battle with depression adds heft to an engaging and moving call to arms' * Daily Express * 'Urwin wants to show us that the classic palette of masculine emotions- the fear of looking weak or small, the urge to compete, the need to win- are not a response to reality, but a throwback to a world that no longer exists.' * Financial Times * --Financial Times

I bought it for the guy I had started seeing after a long conversation about feelings and "toxic masculinity", just to help him see it is normal for a man to have feelings... something easy to read to get him started on doing some soul searching (which came up on the conversation, I was not trying to impose anything on him)

He never read the book but I finished it in one afternoon, loved it from start to finish it. The tone used and the way of writting is so close you really feel like talking to your mate.
I believe it is a much needed read for everyone as it covers very important topics, highly recommended and easy to read.

This book is well written, insighful, funny and gives a view of masculinity from the authors perspective. Its not the view he will have thirty years from now. At age 24 there are a great many experiences he has yet to encounter, let alone deal with. Yet he judges those who have. Its good but its armchair, and its obvious he knows little of what he speaks. One of the tag lines sums this up. "Our grandfathers inability to deal with the horrors of war". If he finds someone with the ability to deal with the horrors of war I hope he lets us know who he is, because he doesnt exist.

Informative, well-written and researched, funny and poignant - Jack has said a host of things we have either never thought of saying or were scared to utter.
Read it!
Jack speaks from his soul and has the gift of understanding both sides of the issues, wondering: 'how did we get here?', then trying to answer the question and NEVER, EVER lecturing or being 'holier than thou'.
I'm not going to summarise the contents - you just read it for yourself.
Then talk about it. With everyone.
