This was one of those random reads you thank your lucky stars for when in need of a tightly-written, edgy thriller. I was attracted by the cover because I’m in a hot place and I wanted to read something cool. Not the best reason but it paid off. I particularly loved the strong, awkward but compelling female characters and the fact that Hawksley keeps you second-guessing the action all the way through. I hope there a sequel. This was really good, and full of fabulous images of landscape.

If you want a shot of adrenaline, this is the book for you. Not having read a political thriller before, I had no idea if I would enjoy it. But at the end of chapter one, I took a sharp intake of breath and by the end of chapter two, I was hooked. From that point on my heartbeat quickened and at every opportunity, I found time to read this fast-paced, informed adventure. Humphrey Hawksley knows his stuff and apart from the pure enjoyment of reading this story, it taught me a great deal about how Machiavellian world leaders may behave. He describes warfare in its most graphic and bloodiest form and also delves into the analytical minds of diplomats and advisors. Terrifying and exhilarating, this story will make you breathless with excitement. I didn’t want it to end. But that didn’t slow down my reading, as I knew there was a sequel to devour.

Man on Ice is terrific. It gives us politics and action in such a way that you feel the stressed hostility inside the Oval Office and the ice-frozen cruelty of the weather in the Bering Strait. I know of no other thriller that takes us to this real closed border between Russia and America and shows how these two superpowers could be just minutes away from invading each other’s territory. Sarah Palin was right and it's a chilling thought. Rake Ozenna the tough Eskimo islander is a fantastic kick-ass, no nonsense hero and a die-cast opposite to his fiancé the cool-headed doctor, Carrie Walker from Brooklyn. Humphrey Hawksley keeps us wondering throughout if their relationship will survive the high-stakes action. The Mail on Sunday rightly named Man on Ice its thriller of the week, a totally new, unfamiliar setting with strong, unusual characters.

Humphrey Hawksley’s new thriller does not give you a break. It’s finger-biting action from page one to the very end – but Man on Ice is more than a top-level thriller. What is terrifying about this book is its authenticity. Nobody knows how dangerous the world is than the author, a top BBC journalist who has covered wars and crises round the world for his whole working life. There is nothing fanciful about the doomsday scenario that he conjures in these pages –especially in the uncertain world of today. A novel by Hawksley will rip you out of the comfortable certainty of your day-to-day life and plunge you into a geo-political nightmare that is all too real, a “what if?” that will still haunt you when you close the last page.

Unlike any other power-play novel you will read as it really does seem real. The Alaskan heroes eat sleep and breathe ice and snow and the rest spread deceit and deception at every turn. Intriguing and fascinating read from start to finish.

This is a great pacy thriller that has strong female lead characters and a fascinating setting in the Arctic. Hawksley combines all the ingredients of a good thriller with acute political observation about how a future conflict between USA and Russia could easily happen - almost by accident. I particularly liked all the detail about living in sub zero temperatures all the time and the eerie world that the Eskimos inhabit living on the arctic ice. Anyone who likes thrillers and is interested in "realpolitic" should read this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Man on Ice. A book about a special agent who is on the cusp of world war III. I really enjoyed reading the book and the cold war atmosphere it creates. I learn't a lot about Alaska and the US-Russian Border. I would really recommend this book and I cannot wait to start reading Man on Edge, the sequel!
