Product description

From Amazon.co.uk

There’s something refreshingly old-fashioned about director Tony Scott’s action-packed, hard-edged film Man On Fire. Starring Denzel Washington as John Creasy, it’s the story of a man who is working as a bodyguard for a nine-year old girl, Pita (played by Dakota Fanning). The two start growing close, against their respective expectations, and ultimately, the plot takes one or two inevitable turns.

It is, to be fair, a fairly well trodden story path that Man On Fire covers, but what lifts it above the dirge of rivals is the quality on offer. Denzel Washington is a terrific actor to anchor such a film around, and you never fail to believe in his take on Creasy. Fanning, too, is on fine form here. And it’s refreshing to see director Tony Scott putting some of his heavy-editing techniques to one side, to the clear benefit of the movie. There’s no effort either to tone down the violence here, and the film easily earns its 18 certificate.

The journey to high definition proves to be a comfortable one for Man On Fire, unsurprising given how recent the film is. It’s also highly rewatchable, even if you’ve seen it before, and a rare modern day action film that chooses not to compromise itself to get a more commercial certificate. Let’s have some more like it, please… --Jon Foster --This text refers to the DVD edition.
