Undeniably, this is a an excellent collection of Elvis Costello's hits from 1977 through to the mid-1980s with a good smattering of choice cuts from his albums. If you haven't got 'Watching The Detectives', 'Oliver's Army' or ' I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea' then this is the album for you. There are plenty of other hidden gems as well including 'Clubland', 'New Amsterdam' and the classy ballad 'Shipbuilding'.

Quite simply, there is not a a bad track on this entire album. Inevitably most of Costello's finest works are album tracks as they wouldn't be commercially successful but as hits albums go this is a classic.

Now 60 years of age, Declan MacManus (AKA Elvis Costello) has certainly put a shift in: the self-confident singer-songwriter has been plying his trade for nearly 40 years. However only the most short-sighted, and tone deaf, of his followers would suggest that the bespectacled Liverpudlian didn't make his best work in the 1970s and 1980s. That point is proven by this rather immodestly-titled, 18 track LP from 1986. Drawing from his sprawling back catalogue, the strong selection includes the jerky new wave hits which earned him - and his superlative backing group The Attractions - many appearances on Top Of The Pops ('(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea', 'Watching The Detectives', and 'Olivers Army'). With country covers ('A Good Day For The Roses'), Stax tributes ('I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down') and lightly-jazzy, political ballads ('Shipbuilding'), this Best Of also underlines his reputation for versatility.

Unfortunately, The Man - which is wrapped in the same gently surreal photography used on Taking Liberties (1980) - is now out-of-print. However, the cheap, and slightly more extensive, 22 track The Best Of The First 10 Years (2007), covers the same decade slightly better.

What can I say? A great album cover to match a great album. Not to everyone's taste but if he floats your boat, you will feel nineteen again and more importantly, cool.

All you need of first ten years of Elvis Costello, although the sleeve is somewhat basic and unimaginative.
Particularly enjoy (I don't want to go to) Chelsea, New Amsterdam and Shipbuilding.

Good tunes on this CD and a few that need a couple of listens to before you can really appreciate them. Delivered very quickly and packed well too.
