This is a great book, it explores various short stories about real life mountain horror. It is easy to understand why people try so hard to fight for their lifes when they are in freezing conditions, but some people in this book seem to fight harder than you think humanly possible. (If you like a story where someone gets their face covered in corpse-crunching maggots then this will be up your street.)It is a real cracker, a must for any outdoor's, climber type person.

A great book. Sadly we feature in the second story. The Venomous One. Takes me back all the years to 1993 when I was 12 and we found a decomposing body in Surgeons Gulley on Ben Nevis, Scotland. The other stories are interesting.

Format: Paperback
Fascinating stories of tumbles, avalanches, searches, difficult rescues, horrifying injuries, fatalities and trapped climbers. A bit too much to read from beginning to end, but its chapters can be dipped into between other books and it'll keep anyone with an interest in mountains happy. Although there are similarities in many of the tales told, my suspicion that effectively the same story would be repeated over and over wasn't borne out.

Gripping stories of difficult rescues, told by those who were there, doing the rescuing. Some are not that well written, hence 4 stars instead of 5, but the subject-matter far outweighs defects in literary skill. The Mammoth Book of Mountain Disasters: True Stories of Rescue from the Brink of Death
