This story is about a single widowed young mum and her 2 kids, a boy of 10 and a girl of 5 who get locked into a huge shopping mall after a solar flare knocks out all the electricity in the larger area. There are also a couple of 15 year old skateboarding boys and a sinister mother-in-law. She lives above the mall in the residential part but the residents there are locked in too. No help is available from outside and things rapidly get worse as we learn that the mall is 'self aware' and controlled by artificial intelligence. This means that it can learn and alter conditions according to what its' program is. If the program is corrupted, look out! There are many Bots (robots) which perform manual jobs like rubbish emptying and fetching/carrying and they too are controlled by the mall. Some of them look so much like humans that it is difficult to tell if they are or not! One of them is good but others are evil and are hunting the real humans and trying to eliminate them. Scary stuff! This story intrigued me completely. Excellent.

Loved this take on the "I,Robot"...apocalypse robot, thinking mentality and horror all rolled into one....Picked this up as I had read a book with the same title by another author and enjoyed that too...loved the descriptive scene setting giving that delicious creepy feeling something is really off here!!!...not knowing what is going to occur until you turn the next page, nothing is entirely straight forward.you have to read it to discover the plot..no obviousness giveaways that spoil the story...I was gripped...there is a lot of detail and plenty of reading, also I need to keep this and reread because in my eagerness to find out what happens next I know I missed some of the subtleties the author included...well worth every penny and looking forward to reading more!!

I absolutely loved this book, it centres around a family who have been made homeless and have to spend the night in the mall, the mall has everything you will ever need, and no reason to leave. However when a world wide emergency occurs, the mall has too shut down trapping the family inside. A mixture of Westworld, The shining, and Demon seed, the author shines out as the new name to look out for in science fiction. Well worth a read.

The Mall once started was hard to put down. Sci-fi at its best.

The only negative thing I have to say is I don't understand what a detailed history of American Presidents has to do with the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very different to other sci fi books and certainly gives the reader something to think about regarding the connections between AI and humsn behaviour. The story is set in a shopping mall which is essentislly run by robots and follows a mum and her two children as they find themselves 'locked in' with an out of control Ai system. Not sure if this is the first book by this author but I will certainly be reading his next one.

even though i havn,t finished reading it yet, i feel compelled to comment on what i have read so far. for the life of me, i can,t understand why people rate it so highly. most of the book seems to consist of people just wandering around the mall looking for each other, while also avoiding the mall bots which have turned into killers. and when the hell is this book set? considering the level of technology, you would think its the far distant future, but at one point, the mother and her 2 kids go to a cinema, and every film shown is from the 80,s!!!. to make matters even more confusing, each part begins by relating past political events, and mentions ronald reagan!!!! i don,t know what the author is trying for, but its lost on me
