HASH(0x8d136c6c) out of 5 stars A Survivor Agrees... 15 Feb. 2000
By Willow Arune - Published on
Format: Hardcover
As a survivor of male rape, I am happy that a book on this overlooked subject is finally available. Further, not only is this the only book to treat the subject, it does so in a very effective manner. It is not simply acedemic; it is also gripping and real. The personal stories are tales of horror. Male rape is a truly unknown crime. After I was raped repeatedly, I tired to find help. Instead, I was cast out for I "must have wanted it" - one of the myths dealt with by the writer.
Rape, no matter what sex the victim, is a horrid affair. There is much more support for female victims; males often go untreated and suffer accordingly.

HASH(0x8d136cc0) out of 5 stars Important - but flawed 12 Sept. 2002
By Kindle Customer - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This is a fantastic book for raising awareness. However, it is unfortunate that such an important topic - and what I had hoped would be a truly informative and helpful book in my work with male survivors - has so many inaccuracies. The descriptions of state's sexual assault legislation alone is now more than 13 years out of date - and were 8 years out of date when published. Though it has not been a simple process, many rape crisis centers, who face the same lack of information about male rape as survivors, have been doing much to help male survivors since the early 1990s.

HASH(0x8d4909cc) out of 5 stars Still the only book on male on male rape based on the research! 26 Feb. 2015
By crim law prof - Published on
Format: Hardcover
You have to wonder where are the other men writing books about the research and conducting research on rape of adult men. This book is dated now and some reviewers have noted legal information is in some cases incorrect now. That is not Scarce's fault and is not a fault of the book. The book was an ambitious undertaking which gathered all sources of research and official data at the time. It remains the only book focused on understanding the dynamics and distribution of rapes of men many years later. Sadly, most books on male rape victims are about kids and the few that look at adults inexplicably ignore men raped by other men, which is the vast majority of cases. Thank you Michael for taking on this huge undertaking. I encourage more men to step up to the challenge of studying men's risks of interpersonal violence in such an accurate, contextualized and supportive way that focuses on understanding victimization by the most common form of sexual abuse of adult men. This appears to be the only book to date that acknowledges the deeply gendered dynamics of male rape - internalized homophobia and external homophobia as well as patriarchal gender norms of male heteronormativity and invulnerability that keep men from reporting rape and even disclosing much less seeking help. Finally, a book on male rape that understands that sex and gender are not the same thing and explains the impact of gender norms on rape and the victimization experience. Scarce carefully explains how we need to address harmful norms for masculinity to decrease rape and the harm caused by it. These insights apply to rape of women as well.

HASH(0x8d136f48) out of 5 stars Disturbing 2 Aug. 2000
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Very disturbing how this problem is swept under the rug. Even more disturbing is the very real possibility that this is a very prevalent crime that happens every day. It makes me very upset over the lack of published works about the rape of men and peoples' perception that it is either impossible, rarely happens(or only in prison to people who "deserve it"), or is not half as common as the rape of women.
HASH(0x8d3005b0) out of 5 stars The author provides good introduction to the topic of male on male rape 6 Nov. 2014
By A happy customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
The author provides good introduction to the topic of male on male rape, but he didn't describe the unique emotional challenges males are faced with. For instance, he didn't write at length about overcoming guilt, shame, anger, low self-esteem, sexual fears/dysfunction, etc. I guess I wanted to have a more treatment oriented book which spoke of bringing up sexual issues with future partners, exposure therapy, sexual identify confusion, dealing with PTSD, etc. Healing and moving forward with ones life after rape is so important. However, the author does a good job and letting survivors know that they are not alone. The author also didn't speak about young children and teenagers who may have been exposed to sexual violence (and possibly on a frequent basis) and what impact that has. There was quite a bit mentioned on stranger rape, but not enough of being raped by family, former friends, co-workers, bosses, etc. To make a long story short, get this book as an introduction and then read other more treatment focused books on the topic.
