About the Author

Nancy Griffin has been a freelance writer for more than 20 years, writing for newspapers, magazines, and trade publications. Before that, she was a newspaper and wire service reporter and editor. Nancy is the author of two previous books. She also has taught workshops on writing and newsletter publishing for the University of Maine in Augusta. A lifelong whoopie pie lover, she can often be found munching one of these classic treats while writing (or driving, or sitting in the house with a cup of coffee) and she has even been known to share, but not often. Her home is in Thomaston, Maine.

I won this book from a magazine free draw, which was quite exciting. It is a cute little glossy book with a lot of background info about Woopie pies and 16 recipes at the back. I thought, great - I'll make some of these with my kids. Then I saw the ingredient lists. I can cope with the Americanisms like confectioners sugar for icing sugar, and all purpose flour for plain flour, but the problem is with other ingredients - vegetable shortening (a common ingredient in American baking, but not readily available here) and marshmallow fluff which was in all the recipes and I've never even heard of it. My teenage son told me you can get it off the internet, but who wants to go to the bother (and expense) of buying ingredients that way? Ah well. I guess it will go on a shelf and get forgotten about. I wouldn't recommend it for the recipes, but if you want a fun book about these new trendy cakes, go for it. (You could always get British recipes off the many foody websites based in the UK)

There are too few recipes in this 'recipe book' to justify paying Amazon's reduced price, yet alone a price almost twice as high in a bookshop. Of course the ingredients are US-oriented - that is what whoopee pies are. Vegetable shortening is nothing more than hard, white vegetable fat, Trex for example, and thus quite available. As far as some of the other ingredients are concerned, they are basically unavailable in the UK other than via the internet. It would not be worthwhile to spend x amount on postage etc and to wait 2 or 3 weeks for something to arrive from the US if the item costs a fraction of the carriage fee.

In short, OK if you are a fan but otherwise not for the UK user!

As I said in my title I was disappointed in the content of this book - too few recipes and too much background detail.
