There is a lot about different styles of building and the history behind why they are there. A lot of the examples are around the Midlands and North of of England it would have been nice to have more variation.
I had hoped that there would have been more on the actual techniques, however I may need to go back and read that bit again. But the book is more about pointing you in the right direction and model making is a skill that has to be learned through practice.
A great book which I will keep referring to.

I was disappointed with this book. There are a lot of photos of real buildings which is fine, however most of these could have been found by doing a Google search and I felt that in many cases they were page fillers. The author makes the masters for a model buildings company and this is mentioned several times. This is obviously a recommendation as to his modelling skill but at times it seems like an advertisement for various companies. I cannot afford to buy lots of kits and hoped that this book would help me make my own models or at least give me tips on making mine better but on this score it is no different to many of the other books that are around.

This book tells how to build realistic structures for your railroad, that
don't look 'kit built', but rather like true miniatures.
Compared to the material presented here, our American kits can look
rather theatrical!
Building to a higher standard.

I bought Making rural buildings first (same author) and found it really informative with lots of tips and advice. It was however a little lacking in detail. For me this book did not offer much new information and had I bought this one first I would not have bought the other.

The book is clear and concise in providing the modeller with an over view of history of urban areas and how this affects the models being built. His techniques can be followed by all standards of modellers, with good photographs of construction steps required.
