I was expecting a puff-piece for Tesco. This is something very different: a social history of British shopping (and its meaning to the people who do it) through some fascinating (and slightly dodgy) "characters". It evokes the smells of the last 90 years and the class-system that the second world war destroyed. It is strange when a book about a shop leaves you wanting more.

This was an enjoyable book on several different layers. It gave an insight into the changing habits of British shoppers as technology and changing social norms kicked into British society. It also gave a view of how a supermarket grew and developed from a street market to a global empire. The views of past and present employers gave it a sense of reality, and the potted biographies gave the reader an idea where they came from, and how Tesco developed them. The book was very honest about the failures and more importantly the reasons for those failures. Tesco always seems to have had a problem with image, whether you are shopping there or an employee, and it makes you realise the mantra of Jack Cohen, 'stack em high, sell em cheap' still remains somehow
