Synopsis

This book investigates the link between economic policy and the development of racial identity in South Africa. It concentrates on the growth of Coloured political identity in the Western Cape Region and its relationship to Coloured labour preference policies. Dr Goldin examines the tensions within government and amongst employers, as well as the relationship between the two, and suggests that the South African government pursued a policy which attempted to creata a distinct Coloured identity within the country.
