Review

On which the extraordinary tabla player was joined by flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia, guitarist McLaughlin, and saxophonist Garbarek to mesmeric effect. -- The Observer Music Monthly, 50 Essential CDs from Around the World, June 2008

I first heard abaout Zakir Hussain through the Shankar Album "Song For Everyone" which blew me away and totally changed my mind set on music. When this came out a few years later i didn't think that i could feel so moved as i did with Shankar's album. How i was wrong. The opening track slowly took me to a place that i've seldom visited before, the flute so........flutey! transporting you to" India Heaven" when Zakir comes in with his tabla. Both John Mclaughlin & Jan Garberek are perfect partners.
I'm not a great reviewer, but when something touches you deep down, you have to speak out. This album is amazing, i will treasure it all my life.

Funny how Amazon makes me say things I'd never utter in real life. This isn't some can of quick-gratification chemical sweetness that one simply 'loves' and discards. It is an enduring work of life-enhancing brilliance that stays with you, helps you through the hard times, puts really high peaks on the good times, ticks away quietly in the musical part of your being, keeps a snug fit between you and the world. And if you follow up on the musicians, you'll see that's exactly what they were trying to do. It's not about 'expanding consciousness of word music' or bringing 'the Indian tradition to the west'. It's what it says on the box. Making Music. Some of the best I've ever heard.

Genuinely beautiful, graceful, lyrical, calming. This is my favourite album of all time for good reasons. From John McLaughlin's wonderful opening chord, through the rippling Water Girl and moments of ecstatic musical discovery in Sunjog and Zakir. It's difficult to comprehend how the humble human being can create something so perfect and extraordinary. Truly inspired.
