I missed most of these programmes when they were broadcasted on R4. Now I can listen to them again. Although I had already bought downloads from Audible, but I prefer the CDs. V.2 takes you right up to the present in classical music now have them both.

James Naughtie gives a succint and concise overview of Western Art Music (WAM). He dips into periods in music's history to give listeners a feel for the journey music has taken up to Paganini in Europe.

In no way is it in depth but it does give one a sense of knowing a lot at the end of listening. His analysis takes into account all influences that sustains musical making and evolution.

Like a good lecture series in WAM (first year).

This is a definite must for any BMus or BA Music student. The material covered is basic but can assist with written projects or any other research.

An enjoyable and informatively detailed survey, definitely worth listening to but with some limitations. In the earlier sections the discussion is almost exclusively of vocal music, mainly ecclestiastical. This problem disappears in later sections. There is too much spoken word, with a quite a lot of repetition, no doubt because it was originally broadcast in short segments. The musical quality of the recordings is variable, with some extracts sounding very dated (perhaps for cost and copyright reasons).

I did listen to this and I really liked it, too... I eventually sent it to my brother, as he also loves music and this is a great introduction!
Would love to hear the others, too!!
