This is the most fascinating book currently available on how a movie is made. It is a pleasure to read a book by a world-famous director who is so down to earth and friendly. Sidney Lumet makes you feel that you are a friend, and he wants to put you in the know about what it's like to make a film. You couldnt ask for a more experienced guide, Lumet is one of the world's greatest directors and he knows all about it

The book is very engagingly written, and conversational in style. It is divided into topics such as 'Actors', and 'Editing', and he takes you through every fascinating aspect of of making a movie from start to finish.

Lumet vividly describes his own working day during shooting, and this is sometimes so realistic that you feel as if you are looking over the director's shoulder at significant moments during the job. Lumet knows just how to describe what happens. For example his description of the morning when the actors meet for the first read-through of the script is unforgettable.

If you are in any way interested in how a major film gets made, you will probably enjoy this book enormously, it's a classic.

This book is a gift. Few directors really explain anything of the process of film making and when they do it is basic and uninteresting. In this book Lumet talks in detail of every stage of the production of a feature film including his personal experiences as well as others. He examines film from an artistic, technical and commercial angle and does so in a wonderfully entertaining and addictive writing style. This book is an absolute must for any film student or prospective film maker.

For anyone who loves film. For everyone who wants to make film. For all of us who still cling on to the idealized version of motion picture. Sidney is one of the greats and his lessons are well worth reading.

I have ordered many books from Amazon, but clearly can say that this is by far the worst experience I have ever had. After not seeing the book for a couple of weeks; I decided to query it from Books etc who had explained that the book was 'Print on Demand' therefore it would take about a month for the book to be made available before even dispatching. This is fair enough, but it would have been good to supply me with that information before I ordered it.

Nevertheless, I decided to wait as I had waited long enough already (about 2 weeks) but after a couple more weeks no book had materialised. If it wasn't for the fact that I was relying on the book for an assignment then I would have forgotten about it.

There is no tracking information available and they do not send their books out recorded signed for so when the 'delivered by' date had expired a representative of the company said and I quote: "a small portion of our books do get reported as missing in the post" I am all for ordering from book shops as I am a collector of books and love to support businesses, but surely if there was a problem like that they should look to rectify it.

Anyway; I had spoken to the publishers of the book who said that I could have ordered direct from them but it does take a while due to the fact that the book is out of print; so I recommend to other people interested in this book to exactly that.

As I had started the process, I didn't chose this option as time was ticking and the book shop didn't come up with a resolution other than re-ordering the book and waiting another couple of weeks.
