The book contains full colour illistrations throughout weather it's a full page screenshot from the movie, a image of a gun, vechicle or character and concept work its all presented rather nicely with 95% having descriptions to go along side. Smaller screens are also presented at the back along side the full script which makes that quite interesting to read, even if the text is a tad small there Unlike to rest of the book).
This is a 'Making of ' book so (like some expect) don't think your going to pick this up and get every single angle on how this rather brilliant film was made. It DOES however go into quite some detail, just without having too much to baffle those without or with little knowledge on how a film is put together.
Myself (aged nearly 18) find this a subject area that I would consider as a career option and this book while getting across how difficult some of these things are to do has only incressed my thirst for knowledge in this area (and also give me facts that any self respecting Final Fantasy fan should know ;) )
This book overall provides details on the characters, a small section on some voice actors, motion capture, special/visual effects, vechicles, weapons (both coming under sets and props), animation, lighting and storyboards among other things.
Well worth a read for any 'big' fan of the movie and anyone with a passing interest. The book is layed out nicely with good quality paper and binding. If you see this book going for £20, I reckon that you've got a good buy, if its less then, well you have a bargin!
This book is, in my opinion, quite superb. It is amazingly profusely illustrated, and goes into adequate, but not anorakish, depth about the many different aspects of the making of this film. It does not focus unnecessarily on Aki Ross (shame!) and gives equal exposure to all aspects of the film, from the characters to the vehicles to the locations. I've seen reviews that bemoaned the lack of coverage of the Phantoms. Well, there is more than adequate detail on them, although it would, of course, be interesting to have more (as it would on all areas).
So, this is a beautiful book that is really an essential purchase for anyone who loves the film. If you have the DVD with all the extras, this book supplements those and is an excellent companion. As a big fan of the film I really can't praise this book enough. When you get it, take the dust jacket off and have a look at the cover - nice!
Buy the DVD, buy the CD and then buy this book....you know it makes sense!
This book provides a nice look into how Final Fantasy The Spirits Within was created.
The concept art included are mainly designs of vehicles, sets, props and storyboards. Since this is a "Making of" book, it talks extensively about how the art is related back to the story. Among them are subjects like creating flames, flares, using motion capture for acting, composition and other general production techniques.
Character design is lacking in the book. Even though several pages are devoted to each character, there wasn't any concept art on how they come up with the characters. All that is included are the bio stats, film stills, and 3D rendered posed models.
This is a great book companion to the movie.
