Makibes 7 inch Capacitive Touch Screen LCD(C) 1024×600
as there seems to be mixture of reviews for other panels here.
Pros:
- bright and crispy screen
- good viewing angles of the screen (both horizontally and vertically)
- Rpi & Rpi2 SD card images are provided, so you don't have to install drivers, just
write the image to your 4GB (and bigger) micro SD card and plug it into your Rpi.
- screen video refresh seems to be responsive (no lag)
- the screen stand provides 2 viewing angles depending on which end of the stand is used
- it's small, so it fits to a space where regular monitor doesn't.
Cons:
- no assembly instructions, not very intuitive how to assembly
- the screen back-ligtht is bleeding on 2 places around the edge of the screen which is very unpleasant.
I had to use black electrical tape to cover the LCD back-light.
- touch screen has slow response and is not very precise - I usually clicked 1/4 of an inch away from
where my finger touched the screen. Then I gave up.
- touch screen doesn't work without reconnecting the USB cable to Rpi. Yes, that's right, after the boot
you have to unplug and plug back the USB cable to get touch input working. There is a switch on the
back of the screen that turns the screen on and off, but it does not have an effect on the touch screen.
- the touch screen doesn't work with some (I could not test all) stylus pens (I tried to use a stylus that came with my tablet, but it doesn't work).
- provided HDMI cable is very stiff so can not be bent around the screen and sticks out. I ordered a replacement thin HDMI cable
and right angle HDMI connectors to fix that (extra expenses).
- the screen stand is very fiddly and is not affixed to the screen
- although the screen has a HDMI socket it doesn't work with general consumer electronics - I tried to connect my PS3 via HDMI and it
doesn't work.
I'm slightly unimpressed with the overall product. Poorly functional touch screen means a mouse or track-pad
has to be used, and the aesthetics is not great because of the sticking-out cables and the bleeding back-light.
On the other hand it works and was not expensive.
It also has solder pads on the back which I believe can be used to expose the GPIO pins that are not used for the touch interface. It loses a star for this not being actual pins as having solder onto a device sold as plug and play seems counter-intuitive.
Also beware, I wanted to use this on a PC to get at the console interface but it can't be used for that unless you can change the OS to output 800x480. This screen has no internal scaler, which I suppose is okay for the price but frustrating as finding screens at this size that work with standard resolutions seems to be impossible.
Also, what on earth are the screws and bolts for? Only one matches the mounting hole on the Pi and they are impossible to fit as the screw heads are behind the LCD panel and just turn if you try to attach the bolts onto them. :/
Actually there are no instructions available out of the box. The product is a Waveshare LCD. I had the 1028x600 pixels version. Go to [...] and pick your version. If you don't want to install their image, you can use their 'drivers' which is essentially their version of the compiled kernel.
Download it to your Pi's SD card. At this point you have to be attached to a different monitor.
Extract it.
Run the executable. It will reboot at this point. Let it reboot.
Shutdown, attach to the LCD and power it back
(instructions are there on the site as well)
Things to keep in mind. Raspberry Pi version you have. If you have a Pi2 get the Pi2 drivers. If you have a Pi Zero get the B/B+ drivers.
Also confirm your kernel version (uname -r) and get the appropriate drivers v3.x or 4.x
I think this is a pretty good screen to start with. I will tinker around with the modified kernel and see if anything is actually broken. Till then, a 5 star product!
EDIT: Amazon is showing the resolution of my purchase (I think because in4dealz no longer has the 1024x600 version). Look around on Amazon, other sellers still have it.
EDIT 2: The touch functionality stopped working after I upgraded the kernel (as expected). But I found a good user mode driver on Github that does the job for now. Will post the link once I trace it back, should have forked it!
The supplied HDMI cable is 300mm long tip-tip but as a flat cable doesn't work well for me, I bought a cheap, more flexible 500mm HDMI cable which is easier to use. The supplied USB power/data cable is also 500mm. Using the supplied spacers, I have mounted it falt on a piece of paxolin which is good enough for this comapct unit. Total load current ,including bare RPi3 is around 70mA at 5V.
I have left the supplied screen protector in place which does dim the display a little but seeems to have no impact on the touch screen. Viewing angles are adequate but nothing to shout about whilst broghtness is fine. The on-screen keyboard (matchbox-keyboard) works well with the supplied pointer.
