Now I've discovered just how powerful and easy to use these boards are I can see so many uses for them. And so unbelievably cheap! Though if I buy one for every idea I've had in the last week it could soon turn into an expensive hobby... :)
However, getting started was a bit more difficult than expected.
Points that I'd come across were that the board identifies as a WeMos D1 Mini so in Arduino studio makes sure to select the WeMos D1 R2 & mini board (after adding the ESP8266 community boards from the board manager).
Also ensure you have the latest CH340g drivers (I had to download these for Mac from a Chinese(?) site but worked straight away) and select the wchusbserial1460 (this is what it showed for me) port.
I was originally looking for a WIFI shield for an Arduino Uno, but realised that with this I didn't actually need the Arduino, this thing does it all. Difficult to imagine how anybody could make something like this for this price, very impressive.
For this price it's a no-brainer.
I have flashed ESPEasy firmware on this and am using it for a multipurpose sensor and relay controller. Great little SoC units
