I think even if you are not a chess fan you would like this documentary. To enjoy it you don't need to understand what a minority attack or the counter play of a isolated central pawn.

You just need to know what family is about. How important is to dream and work hard to achieve what you dream about.

Is this documentary the story of a genius?. Probably yes, but more than that, it is the story of a child loved and supported by his family. It is the story of a child with a great talent becoming an adult with no less troubles than everyone else. It is the story of a smart father who detected his soon talents in time, and then knew how to manage a very difficult path life.

Personally speaking I like very much the format of the documentary and the intents music during the critical moments. It is definitely a fantastic work highly recommended for everyone.

An intriguing documentary more about the human mind than chess
Verified purchase
I don't think you need to know much or anything about chess to appreciate this film. It is an exploration of human intelligence — intuitive pattern-seeing vs computer-informed analysis at the world's highest level, and the emotions and love and devotion that empower and cripple human ability. Magnus has a genius that belongs to an order of intelligence that suggests a kind of spiritual potential within humanity — he is compared to Mozart. And yet much of the story concerns the most human of concerns and sufferings and joys and the treasure of family life. Do try watching it.

Inspiring - beautiful soul and family

Superb, such an inspiration to see the family united behind Magnus, which I like to believe gave him an edge over its competitors. It is also inspiring to see a positive, smiling young man showing that success does not have to mean having hardships all the way but appreciating each step, learning, practicing and enjoying what we do. congratulations, I hope he will keep that beautiful smile ;)

Boring, no substance

The most boring documentary I've ever watched. No substance. Just a tale of someone winning an increasing number of games of chess. There's nothing enriching or inspiring about this documentary.

I’d never heard of Magnus and I don’t know the first thing about chess and yet I’ve watched this film three times. It’s a fascinating insight into genius. Highly recommend it.
