Recorded at a time when jazz was in the doldrums, commercially and artistically to some extent, this recital catches one of the great jazz pianists in great form. Harris never compromised and there's a wonderful feel of distilled experience on some tricky bop stuff and poised ballads. Like the late Brian Lemon this player had a wonderful touch and evenness which gets you to hear the lithe invention. The trio work well and Carter gets a chance to shine. Dig Leroy Williams too - some lovely brushwork. The company knew how good it was when they titled it.

Listen hard and you will be rewarded. I say this as it is so easy for the piano trio to become merely something pleasant in the background.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent is an appropriate title 27 Mar. 2000
By Christy Guinness - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Barry Harris has never followed fashion and has long carried a torch for Bud Powell This album demonstrates that he is unique to himself and that quality defies fashion. It is superb bop piano with the right mixture of old and new charts. The consistently excellent Ron Carter and the lesser known Leroy Williams contribute well to a very enjoyable session. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Barry Harris at his best in his prime, at the height of his creativity. His original compositions carry the recording and are full vitality and sensitive artistry. Great arrangements.

4.0 out of 5 stars A break from run-of-the-mill 20 Feb. 2009
By Eric Sedensky - Published on Amazon.com

One can be forgiven for not being all that aware of Barry Harris, but once you hear him play, you won't soon forget it. This guy is a really smooth, really cool, really swinging pianist. This recording just bops along so that it ends before you even feel like you've started listening to it. The songs are a mix of Harris originals and lesser known tunes, and all the songs on this recording were new to me and are still the only versions in my collection, which makes this CD stand out. The sound and production are clean, allowing the music to conquer all. This gets a lot of play time simply because it is so different from the bulk of my music collection. That's sure to make it a magnificent addition to your collection too.
