We bought the first kettle in Peter Jones. The lid would not open after a weeks use so we had it replaced. Then arriving home with the replacement it switched off just after I switched it on. I returned to Peter Jones who then told me to get a different kettle as they had quite a few complaints. I thought 3rd time lucky and got another replacement against his advice. (I like the design of this kettle alot!) Then after arriving home the lid would not close!! I could barely belive my own eyes. The last kettle I had cost £11 and lasted 15 years. This very expensive kettle - well quite frankly is costing me a fotune in travel expences....don't buy it!

Fantastic product. It does the following exceptionally well:

    1. Looks good, stylish yet utilitarian - does not over do the design

    2. Well made: heavy gauge stainless steel, rubber where there should be rubber and a lovely soft opening lid. This really is a quality product worth the extra

    3. Easy read filling gauge which lights up with a blue light when on - looks great and really functional

    4. Fantastic base with retractable flex facility

Overall: well designed, well made and looks good. I would buy another at the same price.

This kettle looks lovely. However, it develops rust inside the lid and on the outside. Also the lid doesn;t open every time.
    An expensive mistake

Am now on my 4th replacement kettle.
The 2nd one wouldn't switch on every time; the third leaked water

I am running out of warranty and soon will have no kettle

    DO NOT BUY THIS KETTLE

Bought this from John Lewis 2 years ago and it is now rusty and leaks around the bottom, looking for replacement. Not worth the money!

I bought this kettle from John Lewis. The first began leaking from the base of the handle within four weeks. John Lewis sent a replacement, which worked fine for the next thirteen months, but then developed the same problem. I was then sent a third, because it was still under guarantee, but I have now found the switch is faulty. When I boil water for a coffee, the appliance switches itself off about six times before it has properly boiled. I now have to hold the switch down till it boils. It looks stylish, but from my experience it is very unreliable. As far as I am concerned it is not worth the money.

Bought the polished steel equivalent from John Lewis December 2008. First impressions - great looking kettle with a very nice feel.

Unfortunately, after a few days of use, lid opening button became dysfunctional. Lid would only open intermittently, regardless of whether kettle contained hot water or not. Problem became more frequent with increased use.

Kettle returned and replacement received. EXACTLY the same problem all over again after only a few days of use. Not good enough for a kettle that costs about £70. Very surprised that a relatively simple mechanism can be so unreliable.

Would definitely NOT recommend this kettle as the lid mechanism is very likely to breakdown at some point, if yours hasn't already!

I've now owned this kettle for 4 months and it has been brilliant. It's very well built with clean modern lines and solid construction. It neither leaks nor drips when pouring and boils very quickly. The only thing that had concerned me had been the Magimix logo stamped into the side but it is quite subtle under normal lighting. The best kettle I've ever owned.

It's interesting reading the mixed reviews this kettle has received. Some of the problems seem valid, like the lid faults. Some of them seem to depend on the of the owner's own preferences, like noise & weight.

As a weakly nerd I can say that this kettle, while heavy, doesn't seem overly so. Even when I fill it to nearly full, on those occasions when I need it for cooking, I can still easily lift it to the sink and back. The noise as well, while loud, only lasts for the time it takes to make a brew and is rather reassuring - I like the noise. And, while the kettle's not cool to the touch, I'm amazed the surface is still only mildly hot after having brewed water to boiling point.

I haven't noticed any rusting, but then I've only had it for just over a year, and the people who have noticed this seem to have had it for over two years.

So, it seems if you get a good one, it's one of the best kettles around. If not, be prepared to endure any number of faults. It's your call.

[Follow-up: After doing three years of good service my original Magimix (which this review was of) was replaced. This was due to a replacement limescale filter not fitting correctly. To their credit, Magimix replaced it under the warranty. However, the replacement has many of the faults listed in some of the reviews of this kettle. This leads me to believe that the original Magimix kettles were of higher quality (mine was manufactured in 2007). The replacement kettle's problems include the open lid button not working correctly, the kettle getting hot after boiling (my original only got mildy hot), a leaky spurt and a strange smell inside the kettle which I can't get rid of.

So my original comment about quality control stands - unfortunately I now seem to have a dud one, and my warranty runs out soon. I will not be getting another Magimix as a replacement. (And I've knocked my review down to three stars, in light of this replacement kettle).
