‘We are incredibly fortunate to have Carlos Castaneda’s books… One can’t exaggerate the significance of what he has done.’
New York Times

From the Back Cover

Thirty years ago, Carlos Castaneda published 'The Teachings of Don Juan', the true story of his encounter with don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian sorcerer who guided the young anthropologist on a magical journey into another world. Castaneda learned that for us to perceive any of the worlds that exist besides out own, not only do we have to covet them but we need to have sufficient energy to seize them.

For the first time 'Magical Passes' offers the key to this energetic conditioning. Castaneda reveals a series of body positions and physical movements that enabled sorcerers, and their apprentices, to navigate through their own sorceric journeys. These movements allow the reader to achieve new levels of physical, psychic and intellectual vitality. By sharing this centuries – old wisdom, Castaneda makes it possible for readers to travel to some of these other realms, which are as real, unique, absolute and engulfing as our own world.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Carlos Castaneda's books… one can't exaggerate the significance of what he has done."
'New York Times'

"Carlos Castaneda is one of the most profound and influential thinkers of this century. His insights are paving the direction for the future evolution of human consciousness. We should all be deeply indebted to him."
'Deepak Chopra'

Before he died, Castaneda wanted to pass on everything he had learnt in a lifetime of intense immersion in non-ordinary reality. The magical passes, as he suggests, are probably the most valuable part of his legacy, more so even than all the other extraordinary books describing his apprenticeship with Don Juan and his subsequent development as a nagual in his own right. The publication of the passes represented the final changeover from the Toltec order with its private initiations to a modern age in which the path is open to anyone who wants it badly enough. However, I find it hard to believe that anyone could learn the passes from a book - or even from one of the Tensegrity videos which are also available. In my experience I couldn't even do it from a live workshop with Castaneda's trainees. The movements are quite tricky to do properly, the sequences are complex to remember and absorb (cf. for example Gurdjieff's 'oriental dances' or at a simpler level the Tai Chi form) and the stamina and physical fitness required is considerable. Above all, the intent has to be there. For this reason I feel that this book, unique as it is, is really only a manual for the most dedicated of students, who have probably already learnt the passes from a live teacher, or for those who want to own a copy of anything Castaneda put his hand to.

An excellent book consisting of series upon series of descriptions of movements that will increase your personal power and help you enter the magical worlds described by Castaneda. It includes intoductory chapters where the basic tenets of Don Juan's teachings are summarised. If you have read and understood Castaneda's books, this one will help you de-theorise...

Aside from the exercises , which are generally clearly ilustrated by photographs accompanied by explanations , there is also a good amount of philosophy contained between the covers , which largely revolve around a concept termed the 'assemblage point' which governs the way that we ( as humans ) perceive the world around us.
The general claim of the book ,then,is that by practicing these excercises we can alter our perceptions without resorting to the use of psychotropic plants etc...
How succesful a practitioner will be in accomplishing this certainly cannot be guaranteed ,but for those looking for an excercise book with a bizzare twist, featuring routines which will still improve physical fitness , if practised regularly , this is well worth reading.
The excercises are allegedly based upon genuine American Indian shamanic traditions , and seem to represent largely a kind of 'active yoga' with similarities to Tai Chi and , at times , African tribal dances .

This is of course fascinating, being about Don Juan's teachings. As for the magical passes themselves, I've watched videos of classes of people doing the movements, and they don't look inspiring. But I don't know anyone who has done them. Hatha Yoga, if properly taught, will give you more, as many postures are on the ground and inverted. and also work with the energy field, Don Juan's 'coccoon'. Also Tai Chi and Chi Gong will give you the same connection with the energy field.
