It is so sad that Richard Idemon died so young, his engaging personality and astrological wisdom are evident in the many gems that lie within these pages and leave you wanting more. The Magic Thread is a delight to have in my collection and testimony to a great talent. Transcribed from a series of lectures, this is a very valuable book.

I was delighted to see that this book had been re-issued.Richard died in 1986 but through this book and through his relationship book "Through the Looking Glass" his articulate and wise presence remains with us.The book is a carefully edited transcript of a 6 day seminar co-led with Liz Greene.Richard beautifully defines his ground breaking approach to Psychological Astrology by taking the seminar group through his method of finding the magic thread in an individual chart. The case studies are clearly deconstructed .Throughout,Richard's experience as a psychotherapist adds to his breadth of vision. He raises issues to do with being a counselling astrologer which are still highly relevant today. The tone is humourous, intelligent, caring and incisive all at the same time.
Highly recommended for any astrologer.

Format: Paperback
This is the first book I've read by Richard Idemon and I found it was very interesting and thought provoking. As with many astrology books it takes the format of transcripts of seminars given by the author - in this case in 1986. Surprisingly enough they do not date. The book's sub title - `Astrological Chart Interpretation Using Depth Psychology - explains what the book is about. The author uses myths and Jungian psychology to study astrological charts.

Case studies are provided of well-known people and the audience participation brings the whole thing to life. The subjects covered are: - inferior and dominant functions; shadow issues; the Ascendant as mask; counselling etc. Whether you are engaged in astrological counselling as a professional or are simply interested in exploring your own astrological chart with a view to understanding yourself in more depth this book will be of interest to you.

I was particularly struck by the two chapters which concern incest and the damage it had done to two sisters and the lady who had serious medical issues. I found her own short autobiography included in the chapter titled `The Case of Linnie Ozer' very moving and the exploration of her chart in the light of the autobiography really brings the chart to life.

This is a great book for intermediate to advanced astrology buffs. If you like astrologers like Stephen Forrest, Liz Greene, and Stephen Arroyo then you will like Richard Idemon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Into the Taurean Labyrinth 17 Mar. 2002
By Jude Cowell - Published on Amazon.com

The Magic Thread, done from conference notes, is chocked full of
ways to "distill" the chart by looking at functions (missing/inferiors are covered), polarities, major aspect configurations,& degree significance. The lack of organisation in the material, due to the format, can be overlooked as the nuggets are worth the effort!
The info on Transpersonal (universal) planets--Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto-- in their interactions with personal planets, is invaluable, and goes well w/ Dane Rudhyar's Transpersonal work. The info on singleton planets, inferior functions, and T-Squares, yods, etc. is well-explained, although sometimes disjointed by the conference format.
Idemon's method of distillation is a quick way to see the "legend" of a chart, keeping the many layers of a chart more manageable. Follow Ariadne's Thread with this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Re-Learning Astrology 5 Jan. 2011
By Xanna V. - Published on Amazon.com

I have been a "professional grade" astrologer for over 40 years and this book has me stepping back and starting over with a refreshing new way to view the planets as actors in a passion play of life. This promises to add more "life" to my readings, and I really like the techniques employed therein. The chapters are basically transcriptions of workshops done 20+ years ago.

(I purchased the book for a specific chapter and had hoped to have more "this means" material to reference. I am not totally happy with what I found there, style-wise, but in going back and starting from page one, I think that I will become very, very comfortable with this "new" process of delineating and may be able to extract more from the referenced chapter than I did on that quickie run-through.)

I truly recommend this book as an experiment in your chart work, and you can evaluate its "fit" for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic! 2 April 2012
By Outis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have been studying Astrology for years, own at least 40 some books, but it was not until I came upon this book that it all made sense in a cohesive way. Richard's delineation techniques are wonderful- especially for those of us who approach astrology from a depth/Jungian point of view, and want to help our clients evolve in a meaningful way.

I can't recommend this book highly enough- too bad the limit is five stars.
