This book managed to catch my imagination from the very first chapter. I bought this book thinking it was just another fantasy book, but Modesitt's writing had me hooked all the way through. This was the first of the series that I layed my hands on, and it convinced me to buy the whole series and read them from beginning to end.
Modesitts writing style is what makes the Saga of Recluce such a great read, I advise you all to lay your hands on a copy of this book.

out of the saga of recluce i personally found this book the best of the lot, it had a very nice mix of action. and the characters are well develloped which helps to make the story interesting. the story starts in a small town in recluse were he lived for most of his life an grew an acute liking for engineering then dorrin leaves to go on a quest type thing called a dangergeld. during which he becomes a smiths apprentice and then makes a lot of money as a healer. once he has returned to recluse he starts up a small city the starts building iorn ships which he uses against the evil wizards.

Fast action, at times a dim hero but he does catch up eventually, unlike some of Modesitt hero's this one is inclined to whine a bit, never the less it does tie up neatly the interweaved stories of Lerris's family

As with all of the Magic of Recluce series this book takes you to another world. A world that seems real witn real people. L. E. Modesitt creates an interesting story where the reader is involved.

Can't get enough of L E Modesitt Jr. Started reading the soprano sorceress again which led to my dragging out my old copies of the Recluse saga only to find some missing hence this purchase.
