Product description

Product Description

2010 digital remaster of the classic Badfinger album, released as part of a celebration of the best ouput from Apple Records.

Badfinger were the most consistent of all the Apple artists releasing four albums. Magic Christian Music was the first and was recorded at a time when they were still known as The Iveys. At that time the group consisted of Pete Ham, Tom Evans, Ron Griffiths and Mike Gibbins. Paul McCartney had been asked to write the theme and produce two other songs for the Peter Sellers/Ringo Starr satire movie "The Magic Christian". He went into the studios with the Iveys and came out with a hit record. The subsequent album released just over a month later in January 1970 comprised of these three tracks, other new recordings and some re-workings of titles included on their Iveys album that had been only in a few countries in the previous July. In total Paul produced three tracks on the album with the others produced by Tony Visconti and Mal Evans.

This 2010 edition includes five bonus tracks. These include previously unreleased versions of "And Her Daddy's A Millionaire" and "I've Been Waiting", "Mrs Jones" (remix) and previously unreleased mono mixes of "Sali Bloo" and "See-Saw Granpa".

Like the equally brill Big Star – Badfinger is one of those bands. Given the quality of their music and the wads of writing talent within their ranks - Badfinger should have entered the music charts on a more regular basis (especially in Blighty) - but instead have entered the realms of Music Legend precisely because they didn’t succeed commercially. They charted only three singles in the UK (one with the help of McCartney) - but none of their six albums on Apple or Warner Brothers grabbed the interest of the public.

Formerly known as THE IVEYS – the half-British, half-Welsh band famously signed to The Beatles Apple Records in 1968 – promptly pushing out two 45s and one hastily withdrawn album. The "Maybe Tomorrow" LP did at least get release in some Europe territories and Japan - but was unissued on Apple SAPCOR 8 in the UK. A quick line-up change (Bassist and Vocalist Ron Griffiths departed to be replaced by Guitarist Joey Molland) and a re-naming to the more funky BADFINGER - their next step was to feature three of their songs ("Come And Get It", "Rock Of All Ages" and "Come On Till Tomorrow") in a 1969 comedy spoof film called "The Magic Christian" (directed by Joseph McGrath). In order to get a 'Badfinger' album out into the market place that wasn't strictly a Soundtrack – seven of the old IVEYS tunes were remixed, edited, mined and added to the movie three and other stragglers for a standalone album - "Magic Christian Music". And that's where this dinky little 2010 Apple CD reissue steps in. Here are the core details...

All too sadly cut down in their prime, Badfinger were well on the way to superstardom with this classic Album from 1969. For me this album is one of their strongest (perhaps due to the close presence of Apple and Beatle personnel along with production and song writing from Paul McCartney - even if credited to messers Lennon/McCartney at the time). The bonus 12" single is a real treat for Apple collectors. It is just a pity that EMI/Apple at the time of release, didn't promote all the re-issue series a lot better though. It would have given the collectors such as I, much more availabilty to the releases, before deleting them once again after such a short run. In my opinion, this is certainly one of the best reissues from the original vinyls of Badfinger. Rock on Tom, Pete and Joey.

The Iveys have now become Badfinger. Paul McCartney has gifted them a sure fire hit in "Come And Get It". Some of the songs from The Iveys album are added, and a few more good songs are written to complete this album.
The album sounds a little dated today, but it reeks of potential, which was soon to materialise in the later "No Dice" and "Straight Up" albums.
Well worth a listen

It says something about the quality of Paul McCartney's output that he could afford to give away the song, 'Come And Get It'. Naturally, it was a big hit. 'Magic Christian Music' is, however, one of Badfinger's less interesting releases, simply because half of the tracks had already appeared on their gorgeous, but unnoticed 'Maybe Tomorrow' album as The Iveys (check that one out).

The new songs are mostly pleasant, upbeat, if lightweight, rock songs. The exceptions are the outstanding ballad, 'Carry On Till Tomorrow' and 'Walk Out In The Rain' which, though commercial, sounds like something Engelbert Humperdinck would record. This album gave Badfinger a deserved foothold but their inheritance from The Beatles was to be at its most rewarding on the next three albums.
