The situations are reasonably novel (war between mages, told from the point of view of people without much real power; refugees encountering an alien culture; and-less novel- coming of age in the shadow of famous parents); the writing is competent, and at times inventive; the characters are believable, and the plots are quite satisfying. I whole-heartedly recommend this book. It may not set the literary world on fire, but it's a good read.
