MADONNA The First Album (1983 German issue 8-track CD album including Holiday Lucky Star & Borderline with lyric booklet picture sleeve)

Amazon.co.uk

Madonna became a star upon the release of this, her self-titled debut. But because her stardom was thanks largely to her videos, which found her dressed provocatively and rolling around on the floor, most folks were all too willing to look past the overall quality of the album itself. Even with its somewhat dated keyboard textures and mechanised drum sounds, the album holds up incredibly well. There's "Borderline", which exudes a certain naiveté, something rarely associated with Madonna; "Holiday", which is sweet and celebratory; and "Lucky Star" a dance-floor classic. Songs like "Everybody" and "Burning Up" split the difference between dance music and new wave, which was popular at the time. That latter tune, in fact, contains a line that could be seen as a ready indicator of all that was to follow in Madonna's storied career. "Unlike the others, I'll do anything," she sings. "I'm not the same / I have no shame." No kidding. --Daniel Durchholz

Extensively reworked by Mark Kamins in early 1982, Madonna disliked pretty much everything Reggie Lucas produced for this album, Madonna laments how she infuriated Lucas by sacking him from the job at the last minute. Proof if it was ever needed, that Madonna was and always will be in total control of her music, image and career. Nobody had that autonomy back then and today, artists like Taylor Swift, GaGa and Beyonce all sing to the tune of a record execs dance. They are owned and controlled in a way Madonna never was, music machines or puppets? Puppets! But back to the album, it never hit the spot first time round, it became a slow grower. In the US it has spent the longest run of any female album on the hot 200 album chart. In the UK it has sold just shy of a million copies, producing 3 top 10 hits two of which sold over 600,000 copies each! Not bad considering her only promo back then was a stint on The Tube and Top of The Pops! But its as close to pop perfection as music gets! And its pop which has endured. Holiday, Luckystar and Borderline remain radio and club staples, Holiday alone is one of the most kareoke sung songs of all time. And unlike debut pop efforts from Kylie or Britney, its foundations actually lay in the credible underground new wave disco scene, not the anals of some manufactured pop machine where everything sounded the same! Madonna sounds as unique now as it did back then, little wonder it went on to sell 9.5 million copies and make Madonna a house hold name. What came next however would Go on to cement her status as pops Royal Queen for the next 36 years and beyond. Iconic

In the begining of madonna's career people thought she was a one hit wonder - this album went on to sell 22 million copies worldwide and is one of the biggest in history apart from wacko jacko's thriller album.
Most of the songs on the album were written by madonna, laying down her raw emotions at the time, the brilliant LUCKY STAR which she wrote and one of her real songs to be heard from millions, the excellent BORDERLINE which madonna shot her first video to accompony the song and the joyous HOLIDAY which is the song that everyone knows her by.
Ironicly the first ever song she ever released was the song EVERYBODY even though the song is at the very end of the album.
This album sounds just as good as it did in 1982, there is also the same album but a re-masterd edition with 2 new songs and has been cleaned up to make it sound new.
A must have album for any madonna fan and one of madonna's most original to date.

The cd is in a very good condition but it's a different edition as it has a different cd cover. Burning up is the 3' 45'' time instead the 4' 45'', I wonder if there's any cd left with this rare track version.

Madonna's debut album is amazing and a must have for all fans. This edition is the first release and features similar artwork to that of "Like A Virgin". However music wise they're 2 worlds away, this album has many hits and is the best of Madonna.

Lucky Star - 10/10 (extremely catchy and real 80's pop)
Borderline - 09/10 (another hit single)
Burning Up - 10/10 (catchy, fun, sexy, all things Madonna)
I Know It - 07/10 (catchy pop song)
Holiday - 10/10 (classic Madonna hit)
Think Of Me - 10/10 (sadly not released as a single but up there with the hits)
Physical Attraction - 10/10 (the b-side to burning up, very good)
Everybody - 10/10 (Madonna's first hit single)

If you are a true Madonna fan this is a must have although the 2001 re-issue features alternative artwork and 2 remixes of 'Lucky Star' and 'Burning Up', so if you're a first time Madonna buyer I say buy the 2001 edition but Fans this is for you!
