I was a little un sure of quite what to expect from the book to start with. I got a reasonable idea from the sample chapters etc and had heard snippets about the story before its release so thought i'd give it a go.
Being quite a fan of fantasy fiction i can say i have read most of the main players in this genre over the years, and i can happily say that Russell Meek can certainly keep pace with them all. As this is also his first novel i was VERY impressed, and would certanly recomend this book to anyone.
The pace of the story and the development of characters and their depth was timed perfectly i thought. It was fast enough to keep you interested and turning pages yet allowed the time to enjoy the story and not feel you were rushing to keep up or start losing track of the involved and gripping plot.
The setting of scenes and the descriptions of charatcers was also very impressive and many of the usual pit falls that even more seasoned authors often fall into were all neatly avoided. Enough description was given to allow you to build your own vivid pictures and get a real feel for what was happening yet didn't drag on or let you fall into the 'Just Get On With It' mind set.
If you are a fan of this type of novel you certainly won't be disapointed, and if you havn't already dipped a toe into the fantasy fiction world this novel is as good a place to start as any i can think of! I am certainly a new fan and am eagerly awaiting the next instalment of this fantastic new series!!
