Syd Barrett, along with the Beatles, Marr/Morrissey, Nick Drake etc is one of the creative geniuses of pop(!?) music. His solo albums make most of the post Syd Pink Floyd albums sound very bland by comparison. These albums are very unrefined, and most people consider them to be tuneless wailing or droning, but there is a creativity, warmth, and emotional honesty that you won't hear anywhere else. Theres' not only magical tunes and crazy allusive lyrics ('The end of truth that lay out the time, spent lazing here on a painting green!'), but some extremely groovy tracks with a full band. Most of the best stuff is on 'Madcap laughs' (Dark Globe is maybe the most harrowingly beautiful song I've heard) , but 'Barrett' and Opel are also brilliant.

after his much discussed departure from the pink floyd, the band's former front man was coaxed into the studio to make some solo recordings. two classic albums resulted,"the madcap laughs" and "barrett", both of which are included in this package.
both albums include some fantastic work, particularly in the lyrics, which take the familiary nursery rhyme/w.b yeats romanicism of the "piper at the gates of dawn" album to even greater heights. the first album is starker and balder with a simple line up of guitars, bass and drums. the second is more whimsical and includes some nice floaty organ from rick wright, although this sometimes overwhelmes the essential simplicity of the songs.
by all accounts, barrett was not in the best of (mental) health and the original vinyl albums (particularly the first) made something of a feature of this, including some quite harrowing takes complete with false starts and strange grunts from the singer. this reissued cd package puts all of this into a bit of a different light by including takes not used on the original albums. with these, you get more of a feeling of how the songs were put together and the false starts and so on begin to look a bit more like the normal creative process which goes into making any piece of recorded music.
particularly good are the out takes of "love song", "dominoes" and "it is obvious" from the second album "barrett". unlike the album versions, these outakes feature syd and his guitar without any overdubs from his former band mates and they're all the better for it.
Another album "opel" was put together from (most of) the remaining out takes but there is nothing there (except perhaps "word song") which adds anything to the barrett canon.

On thing is certain is that this "box set" is very good value for money. I have been listening to it for some time in the car and a little at home and feel Syd Barrett is fun to listen too but ultimately a little overrated in terms of Amazon 5 stars. The extra outtakes on these albums are worthless however one track did sound better acoustic only.
