Product Description

Product Description

Puccini s compelling opera Madama Butterfly is the story of a young Naval officer who marries a beautiful and innocent Japanese girl, Butterfly. Whilst he views the marriage as a temporary diversion, she is convinced it is for life and gives up her religion, family and culture. He returns home to America but returns years later, with an American wife, looking to take custody of the young geisha s child. Butterfly must therefore make the ultimate sacrifice. This version was originally released in 1943 and features Beniamino Gigli, the world-renowned tenor. Indeed, after the death of Enrico Caruso in 1921, Gigli was largely unchallenged as the operatic world s brightest star. Caruso s successor at the Metropolitan in New York, he appeared in the house for twelve consecutive seasons before returning to Europe. Known in Italy as the people s singer , Gigli was as popular in his day as the likes of Pavarotti today.

Care - this is is a digital version of a 1943 recording, so quality not up to modern standards!

There are few details with the CD or in the item description but I suspect this is the classic 1939 Rome studio recording with Toti dal Monti in the title role and Beniamino Gigli as Pinkerton conducted by Oliviero de Fabritiis. Dal Monti's voice and interpretation are virtually spot on, girlish naivity is coupled with a voice up to the role's vocal demands. Gigli sounds young and fresh, his legendary sweet pure tones coupled with an ease of manner and humour make Pinkerton actually likeable. De Fabritiis conducts a fairly brisk, mostly outstanding orchestral performance with dramatic intensity, passion, and the required Puccinian ebb and flow.

This is one of those remasterings obsessed with scrubbing all trace of surface noise, there is only some light crackle near the end. Fortunately voices and orchestra do not suffer as a result. On my system I have to ramp up the bass and reduce the treble or the sound is excruciatingly shrill. There is also at times a watery effect similar to a mobile phone signal. More seriously the 78rpm discs have been transferred with quite obvious pauses every few minutes between sides. There is no music missing but it would have been better to close these gaps for the sake of musical continuity. The very start of Act 2 is missing. The sound is good enough to appreciate the super performance but I now notice the 1939 recording available on Naxos and Pearl and wonder if these are better more natural sounding transfers. There is no cast list with the CDs just a few notes mainly about Gigli. This was a 'lucky dip' purchase attracted by an asking price at the time of writing of under £3.

It was not clear from description that this was a very old recording. However, good to have full recording-not just highlights
