MAD nostalgia at it's best, as funny today as when it was first published. I would recommend to anybody who wants a bit of MADness in their life :o)

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold it sideways and have some fun. 2 Nov. 2003
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
You have to hold this book sideways to read it so there you already look a bit Mad to begin with.
In the 1950s America was a very conservative place so when Mad hit the newsstands of anytown USA it was like the cultural equivelant of an A-bomb going off. Mad parodied anything that moved and was freshest and most vital in the beginning of its run.
The parodies remain a fresh today as they did then with hundreds of small sight gags that will take more than one rereading to find.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant artwork, ruined by terrible production 20 Jun. 2013

Mad Strikes Back is a major disappointment. I love Mad. The cartoon satires presented here are brilliant, drawn by genius artists: Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Bill Elder. All three are legendary among cartoon-art afficianados. But there's a problem. This 50th Anniversary Edition is much larger than the original paperback. Since the pages are much larger, you'd expect the artwork to big BIGGER, easier to see... right? Instead, whoever designed the production chose to make the artwork actually SMALLER. The size of the plates was REDUCED instead of enlarged on the printed page. The result is an ocean of white space, enormous margins, surrounding tiny art panels. Like in Prince Violent, for example. You may think this was somehow necessary due to the original plates, but this isn't the case. We know it is possible to make larger reproductions on the page, since the splash pages (the first page of each parody) is indeed larger, enlarged from the original. So why make the working panels so small? I bought this book so I could appreciate in larger format the works of these artist geniuses. What a waste this book is. Don't buy it. Buy the original Ballantine paperback version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic humor from The Usual Gang Of Idiots 12 April 2002

Format: Paperback
Funny stuff from the early days of Mad. The crisp b&w art in this 50th anniversary edition looks great. Handy paperback size. Be sure to check out the 1st volume of this series, "The Mad Reader".
